Formed in February 1968, Deep Purple was the brainchild of ex-Searchers drummer Chris Curtis.
The group's first release as Deep Purple, was the single "Hush." Written and originally recorded by American country artist Joe South, the song was later covered by Billy Joe Royal as a short, snappy pop/soul number.
Their next album, simply titled "Deep Purple" and released in the States in June of '69, was their first to actually warrant the term "heavy".

Unfortunately, assessing Deep Purple means I also have to take into account all of the other years and albums of the band's life, and there's a lot of them.
The fact is, when I think of Deep Purple, my mind does not instinctively associate them with all of their eventual shortcomings, but instead associates with them the first time I ever heard the first notes of Speed King, and how within a minute-and-a-half of that track I had fallen in love with the band.
PS: I want to address in advance this notion, seemingly held by many, that classic Deep Purple is "not heavy metal." Defenders of this notion often cite the fact that Purple keyboardist Jon Lord says that he had never heard the term "heavy metal" until the early 80's.

This is the second Deep Purple album with the Mark I lineup of Rod Evans on vocals and Nicky Simper on on bass.
However, this was written by Jon Lord for the members of Deep Purple and it was performed on stage only once: at the Royal Festival Hall along with the Orchestra of the Light Music Society in September 1970.
The problem for fans of heavy metal, a genre that Deep Purple have pioneered, is that this album moves more toward the classic rock 'n' roll sound and that may be disappointing to a few.

At the time of writing the piece, in between hectic Purple tours, Lord in fact wanted to record the entire concerto in a studio but there simply wasn't a budget big enough to do so.
The song already delivers the distinctive sound of Blackmore whose solos alternate with great organ playing by Lord, resulting in kind of a question-answer arrangement between guitar and organ.
The build up to where Purple comes in for the very first time simply remains stunning introducing a great instrumental section before incorporating in an ingenious way the orchestra once more.

I finally saw the Deep Purple doco about the making of Machine Head on TV tonight, the program is one of the Classic Albums series on SBS.
The next song Ian intoduced as one that he said still mystified them as to what the words meant, this of course was Black Night and it was met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Highway Star is the Deep Purple Official Homepage site and there's heaps here to keep any fan amused for ages, there's the latest news about the band, concert reviews, photos, links, merchandise and so much more that I can't remember so you'll have to visit to see for yourself!
