It appears to be very secure as everything is encrypted, but in order to use it you have to have a Hushmail e-mail account.

If that is correct, then they offer zero security so using them is waste of time and money.
Only similiar systems I know that give protection against man-in-the-middle-attack are Hush Messenger and PGPfone.
Even in PGPfone however, the system is not tamper-proof (you have to spell out the encryption keys and hope that your recall your friends voice so nobody is cheating).

I also came across a few articles about a virus posing as the MSN Messenger Beta.
Users who install the fake Messenger will install an IM worm that sends download links to all your IM contacts and assimilates your computer into the zombie bot network pwnd by hackers :(F-Secure says you don't want to download MSN Messenger beta 8.
I say you don't want to download MSN Messenger period but that's just me. I use Hush Messenger by Hushmail and Google Talk.
