Some schools (often called "grammar schools") were sponsored by towns or villages or by guilds; others by cathedrals for their choir.
John's School, Leatherhead, Epsom College and the City of London School, another day school (which derived from a mediæval foundation of 1442) was reconstituted by a private Act of Parliament in 1835 and was held to be a public school by the Divisional Court in the case of Blake vs. City of London in 1886.
University College School, founded in 1830 as part of University College London, was unique in that it neither took boarders nor gave religious education; indeed, by not limiting its intake to a specific religious denomination, it gained the claim of being the first truly "public" school, open to all.

George Hutcheson's drive to build a school to benefit children came from his unfulfilled desire to be a father.
Archibald Edmiston, an orphan himself, became the School's first pupil in 1643 and, seven years later, the School had the "12 boys on the roll", to which the School song refers.
The Girls' School was extremely successful and the number of pupils enrolled was far greater than the building was designed to hold.

The present school is the result of a merger in 1976 between the boys’ school, founded in 1641, with the neighbouring girls’ school, founded in 1876.
In 2001 it also merged with Laurel Park, a girls’ school in the west end of Glasgow, the site of which is now a second feeder junior school.
The senior school is situated in a pleasant, quiet, residential area, 3 miles from the city centre.

 Laurel Park Old Girls' Club Website
Laurel Park School was formed in 1996 due to a merger between Laurel Bank School and Park School.
Unfortunately the school only remained open until June 2001 when the school merged with Hutchesons' Grammar School.
The buildings that housed the school on Lilybank Terrace were used by Hutchesons as a Junior School until June 2006, when the Lilybank campus closed.
