Below, a NAKED Huwawa is slain and beheaded with swords wielded by a beardless Enkidu (observer's left) and bearded Gilgamesh who wears a cap (observer's right).
After Huwawa's death Gilgamesh begins climbing the cedars and lopping off their branches, to make logs of them to float down the Euphrates to his city of Uruk where he will use them to adorn temples.

 The Gilgamesh Story by Tablet
Huwawa was a powerful god who was the guardian of the forest and possessed great strength and seven layers of mystical radiance known as "melam and ni".
Huwawa's name is translated as "bigness" or "giant", and the story alludes to his stature by Gilgamesh's reaction-the great king was frozen with fear at the sight of the god.
In some translations, Huwawa's eyes apparently shot some sort of fire that burned the trees and ground, and his "melam and ni" were blinding.

GH is a central meditation on such matters, and it is not without irony and even veiled critiques of the reckless and heartless act of rulers, who exploit their families, especially their women, who plunder foreign lands and commit murder to further their aims.
It is important to remember that Huwawa, to the Mesopotamians, was no monster, but a divine guardian who had a proper, benign role to play in the structure of the universe.

 SONS OF FIRE
It is the story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu going to do battle with Huwawa or Humbaba, the god of the forest that lives on the mountain.
However, in EoG, Huwawa is set by Ellil to guard the cedar forest, and Ellil is later equated with Jehovah.
It just doesn't seem right that the son would set the father to guard the forest, in this context - unless, of course this is a set-up for the younger god to usurp the power of the elder god through the agency of his defeat by Gilga the hero.

Stripped of his powers, Huwawa is then captured by Bilgames, who in an act of generosity releases him, much to the consternation of Enkidu, who proceeds to cut off the dangerous Huwawa's head.
Upset over Huwawa's death, the god Enlil distributes the magic powers that were once Huwawa's to other entities in the cosmos.
After a recitation of his deeds—including his defeat of Huwawa and his visitation with Ziusdra, the Noah-like survivor of the Sumerian Deluge—the gods reach their decision: Bilgames must go to the netherworld, but he will occupy a place of honor there as a semi-divine judge.

The story of the evolution of primitive man to civilized life is transformed into the tale of Enkidu's removal to Erech, and elaborated with all kinds of details, among which we have, as perhaps embodying a genuine historical tradition, the encounter of the two heroes.
Coming to the Yale tablet, the few passages in which a comparison may be instituted with the fourth tablet of the Assyrian version, to which in a general way it must correspond, are not sufficient to warrant any conclusions, beyond the confirmation of the literary independence of the Assyrian version.
