Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy.
As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny 'failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions.' In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure.

Huxley's passion is taking things that don't belong to him, and before you can say "A la peanut butter sandwiches," Elmo's blanket becomes Huxley's softest trophy.
Surprisingly, Patinkin's Huxley is the flattest character in the film — he's upstaged by both his enormous eyebrows and his Muppet-bug henchmen in every scene.

For those of us to whom the Muppets of Sesame Street (or otherwise) were our teevee pals growing up, and we're talking over 25 years of growing kidlets here, Elmo in Grouchland makes everything complete in the Sesame Street Universe.

Aided by Grizzy Grouch (Stephanie D'Abruzzo), Elmo must climb Mount Pickanose to Huxley's Castle, avoid a giant chicken and an "ultimate test" by the luscious Vanessa Williams as the Queen of the Dump.

With help from his kooky minions, the Pesties, Huxley manages to throw Elmo off the track again and again.

The Movie Review Section:'Elmo in Grouchland' a better film for older kids than toddlers 10/01/99   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
For while the parents of preschoolers might embrace the prospect of a big-screen Bert 'n' Ernie and Big Bird, this isn't the kinder, gentler ''Sesame Street'' of their childhood.
This ''Sesame Street'' is paved with an edgy brashness that will likely prove too intense for younger viewers -- as evidenced perhaps by the number of crying toddlers who took refuge in the lobby at a recent screening -- but will be better received by their older siblings.
As for the non-puppets, greedy Huxley (a very bushy-eyed Mandy Patinkin), while certainly spirited, is just a bit overwhelming in the heavy department.
