Decorated swords, Hwandudaedo, in particular Sohwandudaedo, are first seen in the South, in the second half of the first century B.C. The Hwandudaedo, widely used in this era, was a type of Sohwandudaedo that had a folded blade, and a ring pommel.
The Hwandudaedo was a symbol of the power of a ruler until the end of the fourth century, when due to its symbolic meaning it became limited to personal possession rather than use as a weapon.
The same type of Hwandudaedo excavated in various areas and tombs of the ruling class suggests that the Hwandudaedo was widely distributed as a symbol of political and military power.
