Hwange Park Zimbabwe ... “Bring it on VacationTechnician!”   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Hwange was founded in 1928, when the tract of inhospitable land separating the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls railway from the then-Bechuanaland border was set aside by the Rhodesian authorities as a game reserve, and was gazetted as a national park 21 years later.
In direct contrast to the prevailing cycle before humans intervened, Hwange today is most alluring during the dry season, when the pumped waterholes lure daunting volumes of wildlife across the border from the thirstlands of Botswana, and more elusive residents such as roan and sable antelope venture out of the dense woodland.
Ecology aside, Hwange is essentially a park of three clearly delineated parts: the public zone in the north, the inaccessible wilderness area in the south-west, and a group of three concessions which to all intents function as private reserves.

Hwange elephants   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Hwange National Park has always been managed in terms of the paradigm of 'hands on' as opposed to 'hands off' or laissez faire, with the objectives of maintaining biodiversity and providing for public use and recreation.
Hwange is not the only park in Africa to have experienced problems with overabundant elephant, and while the details and outcomes may differ from one park to another, they have much in common and many lessons to offer in terms of our understanding of the concept of sustainable use.
The power to determine the fate of Hwange's elephants and its biodiversity lies in the hands of a global public represented through a multitude of national and international organisations that has assumed great authority with little knowledge or responsibility and which cannot be held accountable for what happens.

PLANS by coal producer Hwange Colliery Company to raise US$80 million (Z$2.08 trillion) for re-capitalisation now seem to be hanging in the balance because key support from shareholders and underwriters is yet to be secured.
Sources close to developments around Hwange's proposed blockbuster rights issue - which would be the biggest in the Zimbabwe Stock Exchnage (ZSE)'s history - said although the government, as the biggest single owner of the company, had committed itself to the project, the response from other significant shareholders had been non-committal.
Hwange was expected to flight its circular to shareholders on September 7 but did not do so, partly due to a 17-day trade boycott on the ZSE and the lack of critical support from stakeholders.

Research - Conserving Lions in Hwange National Park Zimbabwe
Hwange National Park (HNP) is home to one quarter of Zimbabwe’s lions and, as elsewhere in Africa, survival of the population is threatened by over-hunting.
Until this project began, hunting quotas for the concession areas were set in the absence of reliable information on population size and structure; a situation that could easily lead to over-exploitation, disruption of breeding and social systems, and local extinction.
We are poised to capitalise on our tremendous achievements of the first phase; if we are unable to continue this work, much of the value will be lost because unrealistic quotas would almost certainly be reintroduced, and the population could quickly become unviable.
