To the east is the county of Gokseong and the city of Suncheon, to the west are the cities of Gwangju and Naju, to the south are the counties of Boseong and Jangheung, and to the south is the county of Damyang.
There are a number of mountains in the county, some of which include Baegasan (백아산, 白鴉山:804m), Gubongsan (구봉산, 九峰山), Cheonunsan (천운산, 天雲山:608m), Taeaksan (태악산), Jongamsan (종암산), Ubongsan (우봉산), and Mohusan(모후산, 母後山:919m).
In spite of its southern latitude Hwasun is located at a high altitude, and snow usually begins in November and ends in March.

The county is located in the Sobaek Mountains, and some of the mountains include Baegisan (백이산, 584m), Mangilbong (망일봉, 652m), Jonjesan (존제산, 704m), Bangjangsan (방장산, 536m), Jeamsan (제암산, 779m), Byeokoksan (벽옥산, 479m), and Cheonmasan (천마산, 407m).
As the county is located in the south of the country along the sea it has a mild climate.

In 1405 the 5th year of King Taejong during the Joseon Dynasty Dongbuk Hyeon was dissolved and its territories became part of Hwasun Hyeon.
Hwasun Hyeon and Neungseong Hyeon were combined and renamed Sunseong Hyeon.
In 1963 Hwasun Myeon was raised to Hwasun Eup.

 National Heritage - Gochang, Hwasun, and Ganghwa Dolmen Sites
The prehistoric cemeteries at Gochang, Hwasun, and Gangwha contain many hundreds of examples of dolmens, tombs from the 1st millennium BCE constructed of large stone slabs.
The Hwasun dolmens are a little later, from the 6th-5th centuries BCE.
Like those in the Gochang group, the Hwasun dolmens are located on the slopes of low ranges of hills, along the Jiseokgang river.

Before Hwasun became an administrative community in the Japanese Empire, individual culture was formed along three rivers: Jiseokcheon River to Neungju, Hwasuncheon River to Hwasun, and Dongbokcheon River to Dongbok.
It is thought that there was Yeoraebiriguk in Neungju and Hwasun, and Byeokbiriguk in Dongbok.
Hwasun people planted ginkgo in front of county office to commemorate this reestablishment.
