Le conseil fut suivi, et Hyacinthe Rigaud fut agréé à l’Académie comme peintre d’histoire des 1684 et reçu en 1700 sur présentation d’un portrait du sculpteur Desjardins et du Martyre de St André qui lui acquirent une grande réputation.
Rigaud que Louis XIV ainsi que Louis XV après lui tient en grande estime, devient professeur à l’Académie en 1710 et recteur en 1733 ; Son anoblissement sera confirmé par Louis XV en 1723.
Rigaud qui vit sa clientèle augmenter sans cesse après qu’il ait une première fois peint le Roi en 1694, du décider d’y mettre un frein et de choisir lui-même ses modèles.

Hyacinthe Rigaud (July 20, 1659-December 27, 1743) was a French painter.
Rigaud's best-known work is his 1701 painting of Louis XIV which today hangs in the Louvre in Paris, as well as the second copy also requested by Louis XIV which is now at Versailles.
Hyacinthe Rigaud died in Paris, France on December 27, 1743.

HYACINTHE RIGAUD (1659-1743), French painter, born at Perpignan on the 20th of July 1659, was the descendant of a line of artists.
Rigaud, although he had obtained the Grand Prix, followed this advice, and for sixty-two years painted at the rate of thirty to forty portraits a year, all carried through with infinite care by his own hand.
Rigaud, although the great successes to which he owed his fame were won without exception in portraitpainting, persisted in pressing the Academy to admit him as an historical painter.

Hyacinthe Rigaud and his friendly rival Nicolas de Largillière were their era's leading portraitists, but Rigaud painted aristocrats while Largillière concentrated on the wealthy bourgeoisie.
Rigaud's sitters are shown in elegant stances of natural superiority; they are members of society whose costumes and gestures describe their function within the state.
Rigaud studied in Montpellier and Lyon before arriving in Paris in 1681.

 Biography
Louis so admired this portrait that, although he had intended it as a present to Philip V of Spain, he kept it himself.
Rigaud's unofficial portraits are much more informal and show a debt to Rembrandt (The Artist's Mother, Louvre, 1695), several of whose works he owned.
The output from Rigaud's studio was vast and examples are in many collections.

Painter to the courts of both Louis XIV and Louis XV, Rigaud was the favorite portraitist of royalty and nobility during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century.
In 1708, the year the marquis was married, Rigaud painted pendant portraits- this painting and one of the nobleman's wife (still in a private collection)- probably in commemoration of their wedding.
As in most of Rigaud's portraits, the emphasis is on the subject's social rank, here conveyed by the commanding pose and elaborate costume.
