The upper bedrock under the park is what we’re now supposed to call dolostone to distinguish it from the magnesium carbonate mineral of which the rock is largely composed.
Several structures in the park are of the dolostone, either from local quarries or Lannon, Wisconsin (the ‘Iowa’ building at 56th and Lake Shore Drive, 1930s) or the later Indiana limestone (Museum of Science and Industry.) Look for fossils in the stone walls.
