  Hydragas
Hydragas is a fluid/ gas based suspension system that is an alternative to conventional springs and dampers - although on the MGF, auxiliary dampers are actually employed.
The use of the Metro sub-frame brought with it that car’s Hydragas suspension and the Metro’s unequal length double wishbone suspension geometry front and rear (the now un-used Metro rear subframe is a semi-trailing arm affair, near identical to that found on the Mini).
The consequence of this interconnection is that as the front suspension is compressed upwards, the rear Hydragas unit is pressurised, forcing the rear wheel to the ground.

 Hydragas Suspension
The Hydragas units used in the present research project were from the new Rover MGF sports car, and featured a smaller-volume gas chamber and a damper valve of different construction.
Hydragas was introduced with the unloved Austin Allegro in the 1970s and is still in use on roads today fitted to the MGF.
Hydragas was never fitted to a production Mini, but Alex Moulton has some fascinating prototypes in his stable: a 1966 Cooper S fitted with Hydragas suspension and a 1980 Metro fitted with a more developed, fully interconnected and refined version of the system.

 Not invented here: Hydragas
Hydragas suspension was one of the quiet achievements pioneered and refined by British Leyland - and yet, it never received the praise it deserved.
In principle, it was the same as Hydrolastic – Hydragas cars had displacers, this time partially filled with nitrogen, separated from the fluid by a rubber membrane, to provide the suspension.
Things improved dramatically with the Princess, which did ride and handle very well, but by the time it was launched in 1975, BL was staring down the barrel of bankruptcy – and plans to do anything meaningful with the great Wedge were scuppered by crisis management of disappearing company funds.

 Moulton, Metro, MGF, Hydrogas, Hydragas
Hydragas is a type of automotive suspension system used in many cars produced by British Leyland and its successor companies.
Hydragas attempted to perform the same function and advantages as the famous hydropneumatic system developed by Citroen, but without its attendant complexity.
The means for pressurising the gas in the displacers is done by pre-pressurising a hydraulic oil, and then connecting the displacer to its neighbour on the other axle, unlike the Citroen system, which uses hydraulic fluid, continuously pressurised by an engine-driven pump, and regulated by a central pressure vessel.

 Hydragas
Hydralastic/ Hydragas essentially consists of four spheres- one at each wheel that are interconnected front to rear with hydra-fluid (water with a high content of rust inhibitor/ antifreeze that gives it its characteristic fluorescent green appearance).
Because of the Sporting nature of the F, the Hydragas system was augmented with conventional dampers for further improved suspension control, whilst maintaining soft (for a sportscar) springing.
Hydragas suspension is largely problem free after three decades of development, but there some issues that directly relate to the system’s application in the F. Remember that the MGF uses Metro sub-frames, and the Metro is a Super-Mini sized hatchback.

In addition I would drill through the floor, to the rear of the Hydragas displacer unit and bolt the subframe to the floor pan.
These alterations prevent the subframe moving around under cornering, It must be noted that the tracking of the rear wheels should be checked afterwards and rectified to parallel or slight toe-in.
To enable independent suspension to be achieved remove one of the Hydragas pipes where it joins the three way adapter, fitting another three way adapter to the pipe and blocking off both the spare points.

 Princess: The Development Story
Hydragas, as first seen in the Allegro was the obvious choice, differing only in detail from it in the set-up of its front suspension, which actually mirrored the Maxi.
It has said to be that, if the intention was to achieve Citroen-like ride, the chassis engineers reached their aims very easily; the finished car had a ride quality that was almost in the same league as the Citroen CX – certainly, it had none of the bounciness that afflicted the Allegro.
Luckily, small improvements were made to the suspension system – and if nothing else, the sheer comfort and ride-absorption qualities of the Ambassador demonstrated that Dr Alex Moulton’s Hydragas system could be made to work most effectively and the car would stand as a monument to the effectiveness of Moulton’s system.

The main problem with Hydragas is that over time, the sealed units would lose gas and become less effective.
Looking at a Hydragas displacer the steel sphere sitting on the rear of the unit is most prominent.

I suspect that it may be a worthwhile precautionary measure to the long term life of the suspension pipes and displacer's to drain the fluid from time to time, perhaps every 10 years, replacing with new.
The pressure within the the hydragas system is approximately 350/lb./in², giving a front trim height from the centre of the hub to under the wheel arch of 14.5± 0.25in.

Moreover, pitch control has been augmented by the installation of a restrictor valve in the Hydragas interconnecting pipe, limiting the movement of fluid from the front to the rear sphere under braking.
The car is fitted with Bilstein dampers, and its Hydragas interconnection pipes have been removed so that each Hydragas sphere can be individually set to its own pressure and height.
Gone is the Hydragas system, to be replaced by conventional steel-coil spring-over-damper units, front and rear.

But with the Hydragas suspension now dropped from the TF, MG engineers were able to design a more effective multi-link rear suspension - and provide much more progressive breakaway characteristics.
MG suggests that the MGF featured Hydragas only because it was built on the same assembly line as the Metro - so the suspension design of one car had to reflect the other.
But now the Hydragas Metro is gone...) One of the features of Hydragas is a relatively compact suspension design, so without completely altering the TF's body architecture, the new suspension had to be equally as compact.

Despite early teething problems (the Allegro version of Hydragas was found seriously wanting), it was gradually developed into a very effective and efficient alternative to steel springs on later BL/Rover Group models such as the Austin Metro and MGF.

When you couple this fact with an incorrect Hydragas suspension setting, the car can look like it's on stilts, leading to the "Freelander" like MG s you occasionally see.
Upon fitting the TSW's I discovered that the offset from the hub is greater than the standard wheels, this means that the tyres sit partially under the wheel arches and this has effectively limited the amount I can drop the ride height by.
Consequently, given the lower centre of gravity, reduced body roll caused by the stiffer shocks and Hydragas setup and the slightly wider track, Scarlet is one of the best handling MG s I know of.

The mid-engined layout is a first for Rover in a production car, and the unique VVC (Variable Valve Control) engine is a first for anyone.

If the suspension is externally controlled then it is a semi-active or active suspension.
Semi-active suspensions include devices such as air springs and switchable shock absorbers, various self-levelling solutions, as well as systems like hydropneumatic and hydragas suspensions.
Delphi currently sell shock absorbers filled with a magneto-rheological fluid, whose viscousity can be changed electromagnetically, thereby giving variable control without switching valves, which is faster, and probably cheaper and probably better.

 The History of Rover 114
The lack of a 5-speed transmission would become a major handicap as time went on - the BMC sump-mounted gearbox was never developed to accommodate an extra gear ratio, which was a severe handicap against the opposition.
The Hydragas suspension also gave the car a harsh, bouncy ride despite pleas from the system's inventor Dr. Alex Moulton that it should be interconnected front-to-rear as opposed to side-to-side as was found on the production version.
The Hydragas suspension was finally modified in the way that Alex Moulton so desperately wanted to bring the car back up to standard in terms of handling and ride quality.

The car violated with all the MG traditional values - firstly, it was mid-engined, unlike any previous British roadsters; secondly, it was styled to emphasis sophistication, unlike the honest expression of MG TC or MGA/B/C; thirdly, it employed an unproven Hydragas suspension instead of conventional springs and dampers.
The Hydragas struts were also expensive to source and not free from leakage after extended use.
Having already stiffened suspensions and mounted the subframes solidly on chassis, and the result was still no complete success, MG finally decided to dump the Hydragas struts in favour of traditional coil springs and dampers.
