 turbine on Encyclopedia.com
The three most common types of hydraulic turbine are the Pelton wheel, the Francis turbine, and the Kaplan turbine.
A water, or hydraulic, turbine is used to drive electric generators in hydroelectric power stations.
The turbine drives the compressor, which feeds high-pressure air into the combustion chamber; there it is mixed with a fuel and burned, providing high-pressure gases to drive the turbine, the gases expanding until their pressure drops to atmospheric pressure.

Evaluation of stability of Francis turbine
Acceptance tests performed on a scale model in a hydraulic laboratory may provide the necessary informations for a full description of characteristics significant for the stability of operation of the full-size turbine in its piping system.
Once the turbine is adequately described, the prediction of stability is performed using known methods and is done under responsibility of the technical consultant, as the prototype piping system layout is liable to change after the turbine model acceptance tests.
Technical and economic consequences of a faulty stability of operation are such that the prediction of stability from model tests is one of the major challenges in present research on hydraulic machinery.

Fourneyron's patent described his invention as "a wheel of universal and continuous pressure or hydraulic turbine."
This new turbine was put in operation in 1844, and became the pattern for the "improved Fourneyron or Outward Discharge Turbine Water-wheel" manufactured by E.C. Kilburn and Company, a Fall River textile machine shop.

 ADVANCED  CAR  INVENTION
As the process goes "on line", the hydraulic accumulator operates mainly as a damper between the gas turbine and the engine crankshaft.
Thus the pump of the power steering system starts to pump hydraulic liquid from the hydraulic tank through the non-return valves in the hydraulic accumulator and thus a part of kinetic energy of the car and/or engine is stored there.
As power is needed, the engine computer management system opens the electric valves, and thus let the pressured liquid from the hydraulic accumulator to drive the pump as a hydraulic motor which on its side supplies additional power to the power train of the car.

 Waterpower
The powerful hydraulic (water) turbine was developed in the mid-1800s.
In this case, as in pumped-storage systems, the same machines alternate as pumps and turbines, but the head gained from the tide is used to reduce pumping power during high tide and to increase turbine output during low tide.

Francis' experiments on turbines led to the mixed-flow reaction turbine, which became the American standard.
By contrast, turbines rotated as the falling water was conducted into them, striking the metal veins that spiraled around a central shaft.
Francis continued experimenting with turbines, refining the design of an inward-flow turbine developed by an American named Samuel Howd in 1838.

 The Steam Turbine, Part I
gh, where h is the hydraulic head, gives the velocity of issue from a jet for steam with small heads and also for water, and I shall presently follow this part of the subject furgher in dealing with the design of turbines.
I have said that steam behaves almost like an incompressible fluid in each turbine of the series, but because of its elasticity its volume gradually increases with the succession of small falls of pressure, and the succeeding turbines consequently are made larger and larger.
The subject of our lecture today is the Steam Turbine, and it may be interesting to mention that the work was initially commenced because calculation showed that, from the known data, a successful steam turbine ought to be capable of construction.

In testing the new auto-venting turbines, measurements are required to maximize the environmental and hydraulic performance of the aeration options.
The number of turbine runner blades and stay vanes, the length of the fish compared to the size of the turbine, and the quality of the flow at the point of operation are key elements that characterize survival [12,16].
Modified Kaplan: Eliminating runner gaps, improved blade shapes and an advanced control system to sense the presence of fish are some modifications to a Kaplan turbine designed by the Voith Hydro, Inc. led team of engineers, biologists and university researchers that may increase survival rates to 98% according to one preliminary study.
