The first military high explosive to be put into service was "picric acid", a yellow crystalline substance with the chemical formula C6H3O7N3, which was first demonstrated by the French in 1885.
However, picric acid has a high melting point, making the process of filling shells with it difficult; reacts with heavy metals to form toxic compounds; and tends to be sensitive.
These are salts of "hydrazoic acid (HN3)", which is a dangerous and unstable liquid explosive, and have the respective formulas of Hg(N3)2, and Pb(N3)2.
