Moving inland from the sea, 300 or 400 yards, the soil becomes increasingly peaty and boggy, and the whole character of the fields changes to that of, more botanically diverse, hay meadows surrounded by wet ditches.
I was very interested to note that the ditches and ponds at the site are a stronghold for lesser silver water beetle Hydrochara caraboides; a species that is known to occur in only two sites in the UK, one of which is the Somerset Levels and Moors.
The site is grazed, under licence by five local farmers, who are able to use the area for their extensification subsidy payment in a similar way to farmers in the UK.

Across the whole Northwest region of England 123 species of beetles alone (see Great diving beetle Dytisus marginalis, right) were found to live in ponds.
This included the nationally protected Lesser Silver Diving Beetle (Hydrochara caraboides); with some individual ponds holding more than 60 species of invertebrate (Guest and Bentley 1998).
The Great Crested Newts, Triturus cristatus (see picture left) was found in 20% of all ponds surveyed in the Cheshire region (Guest and Bentley 1998).

Ensure that the habitat requirements of Hydrochara caraboides are taken into account in any relevant development policies, plans and proposals.
This should be achieved through articles within appropriate journals, as well as by a publicity leaflet.
