Haloalkane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Halon is the group of haloalkanes with bromine as well as chlorine or fluorine groups.
By the early 1980s, bromofluoroalkanes were in common use on aircraft, ships and large vehicles as well as in computer facilities and galleries.
One such class are the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which contain only hydrogen and fluorine.

Hydrofluorocarbons, as the name suggests, only contain carbon, hydrogen, and fluorine.
As a class, hydrofluorocarbons remain the only option which could be non-flammable, because they contain fluorine.

Extinction of Hydrofluorocarbon Flames With F/H Ratios of Unity and Greater.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are being considered as replacements for chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants because HFCs do not deplete stratospheric ozone when released to the atmosphere.
In general, the exchange of a halogen atom in a molecule with hydrogen decreases the atmospheric lifetime of the compound.

HYPER- from FOLDOC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
A single (2^0 = 1) point (or "node") can be considered as a zero dimensional cube, two (2^1) nodes joined by a line (or "edge") are a one dimensional cube, four (2^2) nodes arranged in a square are a two dimensional cube and eight (2^3) nodes are an ordinary three dimensional cube.
The fact that the number of directly connected, "nearest neighbour", nodes increases with the total size of the network is also highly desirable for a parallel computer.
It received considerable government subsidies and, while it was considered well-designed and manufactured and a real threat to the Compaq Portable, the Ottawa firm that designed it was unable to beat Compaq.

The program, jointly developed by the EPA and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, will cut hydrofluorocarbon emissions from the annual manufacture of 12 million refrigerator-freezers in the U.S. and more than 60 million worldwide.
Hydrofluorocarbons have replaced ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons as a refrigerant and as a blowing agent for the insulation foam in refrigerators and freezers.
Though hydrofluorocarbons do not harm the ozone layer, they are potent greenhouse gases, some 1,300 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Technology Review: Emerging Technologies and their Impact   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The regulation of hydrofluorocarbons looms in Europe -- and may be copied by California.
In the 1990s, air conditioning suppliers switched from the chlorofluorocarbon Freon to an equally troublesome hydrofluorocarbon called R-134a; while easy on the ozone, R-134a is a greenhouse gas that's 1,300 times more potent than CO The impact has been most acute in automotive applications, where refrigerants often leak out.
According to the chemical companies, the new kinds of hydrofluorocarbons are no more than 150 more potent as greenhouse gases than CO the limit set by the EU for auto refrigerants after 2011.

This invention pertains to the use of chlorofluoropolyethers to impart lubricity to hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants used in cooling and heating systems such as air conditioners, refrigerators and heat pumps.
This invention pertains to a composition comprising a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant and an amount of chlorofluoropolyether that is miscible therewith to impart desired lubricity to the refrigerant.
Compositions of this invention can also be used to lubricate any system in which it is necessary to circulate a lubricant which is miscible in a hydrofluorocarbon, chlorofluorocarbon or chlorofluorohydrocarbon.

DuPont Fluorochemicals Develops Next Generation Refrigerants
The new refrigerants are expected to be compatible with conventional hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) 134a automotive air conditioning systems with the potential for only minor modifications.
These new refrigerants are expected to be commercialized within three to five years, in time to meet the timeline set by the pending EU F-Gas regulation.
The F-Gas requirements call for the phaseout of hydrofluorocarbon HFC-134a in all new vehicle models beginning in 2011, and in all new cars by 2017, and replacement with alternatives having GWPs lower than 150.

The appearance of radiolabel in animals after a gut clearing step to differentiate between ingested and absorbed compound was followed in time course experiments.
Studies were performed to assess whether trifluoroacetate (TFA), a breakdown product of CFC replacement compounds, could affect the metabolism of acetate by freshwater benthic microbial communities and whether they could metabolize TFA under aerobic conditions.

This rulemaking finds that the knowing venting of HFC and PFC refrigerants during the maintenance, service, repair, and disposal of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment (i.e., appliances) remains illegal under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
• Venting of all substitute refrigerants consisting of Class I or Class II ozone-depleting substance (ODS) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and perfluorocarbon (PFC) refrigerants is prohibited under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
