Hydroids are small colonial animals that are often confused as plants.
This hydroid has a hard covering called a thecate that is toothed at the opening for the hydranth (anemone-like structure).
This hydroid is also known as a zigzag wineglass hydroid, which is descriptive of its alternating growth pattern.

 Abstract of Ph
The summer regression of Tubularia crocea seems to be normal in the life-cycle of these hydroids and occurring as a response to ecological changes as rising of the sea water temperature and presence of predators or as a result of an ecological succession for another communities.
Therefore, the morphological variables of the hydroids particularly with growth and maturation are very important and must be taken in consideration in their taxonomy.
On the other hand, Calyptoblastic hydroids as Obelia dichotoma lack these villi. In the hydroid Tubularia crocea, both the oral and aboral tentacles were solid consisting of endodermal core of vacuolated cells, ensheathed by an ectodermal layer packed with nematocysts.

Hydroids are actually colonies of individuals called polyps, which grow on a common stalk.
In order to build up their own colony the hydroids reproduce by budding; all polyp types can bud.
