Topic: Hydrometeorology

The Hydrometeorology Associates, Probable Maximum Precipitation
Hydrometeorology: A "branch of meteorology that deals with problems involving the hydrologic cycle, the water budget, and the rainfall statistics of storms.
The boundaries of hydrometeorology are not clear-cut, and the problems of the hydrometeorologist overlap with those of the climatologist, the hydrologist, the cloud physicist, and the weather forecaster.
Other concerns of hydrometeorologists include the determination of rainfall probabilities, the space and time distribution of rainfall and evaporation, the recurrence interval of major storms, snow melt and runoff, and probable wind tides and waves in reservoirs.

According to the March 17, 2004 Decision # 420-N by the Government of Armenia, the Agency of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of the Ministry of Ecology was reorganized as the Division of Meteorology and Atmospheric Pollution Monitoring.
The fact is the dissolution of the Agency of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring is a direct consequence of parliamentary inaction.
The fact is, the dissolution of the Agency of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring is “change for change's sake” and does not signal a real attempt to raise the net efficiency of the reforms.

Rainfall Measurements and Hydrometeorology in Hong Kong
The hydrological cycle involves the movement of water in three phases from the ocean, land or living matter into the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration and back into the earth's surface through a chain of complex atmospheric processes.
Hydrometeorology is concerned with the study of these atmospheric processes which affect the water resources of the earth and which are of interest to the meteorologist and the hydrological engineer.
Measurements of rainfall and water loss as a result of evaporation are essential for various applications in connection with water resources planning, drainage design, water quality control, reservoir design and operation, irrigation as well as hydrological forecasting and flood control.

 COMET Hydrometeorology Course
This course, designed primarily for operational hydrologists, provides an overview of hydrometeorology and meteorological events that produce both flash floods and systemic flooding.
The principal objective is to increase participants' knowledge of the interaction between hydrology and meteorology during flood events and to enrich their knowledge of new hydrometeorologic observing systems.
Taught at the upper-undergraduate level, the Hydrometeorology course provides an overview of mesoscale and synoptic-scale weather systems that can lead to heavy precipitation.

The purpose of the research proposed here is to elucidate some of the fundamental mechanisms that will help improve our capability to make hydrometeorological predictions at various time scales in the Western Cordillera.
The hydrometeorology (including land-atmosphere interactions, runoff, atmospheric dynamics, and clouds and precipitation) of that region will be simulated at a very-high resolution (1 x 1 km 2 horizontal grid size) with the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS).
For example, we will evaluate what happens to precipitation and runoff when the current vegetation in that region is totally eliminated, or replaced with a different type of vegetation.

Web product, the Journal of Hydrometeorology (JHM) has recently entered the top 50% of journals in the field of Geosciences, with 274 papers cited a total of 1,069 times to date.
WK: I would add that this journal also serves as a forum for remote-sensing applications to hydrometeorology, particularly in the areas of remote sensing of precipitation, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration.
With remote sensing as a key component in many of the large interdisciplinary field experiments, JHM should be the journal of choice for publication of research results from these field campaigns.

ARS | Publication request: Remote Sensing Research in Hydrometeorology
Interpretive Summary: A major focus of remote sensing research in hydrometeorology by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists has been to develop instrumentation, algorithms and models for estimating hydrometeorological states and fluxes, including plant stress/condition.
In addition, ARS scientists are making important contributions in new research directions that are emerging to address difficult problems in hydrometeorological research.
The major contributions are separated into deriving from remote sensing 1) hydrometeorological state variables and 2) energy fluxes, particularly evapotranspiration which includes plant water stress.
