  Hydrophyllaceae (Waterleaf) Family Pt.1
The numerous Bay Area members of Hydrophyllaceae are herbaceous (not having a woody stem), with the exception of the shrub Eriodictyon californicum (Yerba Santa).
Hydrophyllaceae is restricted mostly to western North America, and has no bothersome weed-like members.
A few of the phacelias have stinging hairs, which may give the handler an unpleasant rash.

The Hydrophyllaceae is probably part of the Boraginaceae, but more work on the systematics is necessary.
The Hydrophyllaceae in our flora are all annual or perennial herbs, often rough-hairy, and the leaves are pinnately lobed or divided or entire.

Hydrophyllum in Latin means "water-leaf." The family apparently took the name of a now unknown European waterplant belonging to a different family (Hydrophyllaceae are found only in the New World).
The European plant, whatever it may have been, is represented in antiquity by an "ornament used in sculptured capitals, supposed to be a conventionalized representation of the leaf of some aquatic plant." (OED).
The Hydrophyllaceae are found throughout the American west with a strong representation in the Northwest.
