PB Network | Issue 37 | Hydropneumatic Support Systems
The advantage of hydropneumatic systems is that they allow very long-span structures to be built because they can accommodate large displacements of well over 150 mm (6 inches).
The number of spans and supports is a function of the static, quasistatic and dynamic loads from environmental and operational phenomena, as the required energy dissipation must be distributed at a series of joints along the structure.
Hydropneumatic support systems make it possible to respond to these effects by accommodating large displacements and providing energy dissipation at the ends of the structure, thus eliminating the need of a large number of roadway joints.

Hydropneumatic Water Tanks - Well water tanks, buffer tanks
Large hydropneumatic tanks are usually horizontal and 2000 gallons or more.
On larger versions, the bladder is often replaceable through a flange, which can be either on the top or bottom of the tank depending on the application.
Vertical hydropneumatic tanks can also have a diaphragm which can be fixed or floating.

 CITROËN - Hydropneumatic suspension
Hydropneumatic suspension on DS Citroën became interested in suspension systems at a very early stage.
The hydropneumatic suspension system replaced the conventional mechanical springs by two fluids: a liquid (mineral oil) and a gas (nitrogen).
Hydropneumatic suspension combines a highly flexible system with a constant height, regardless of load.

 Hydraulic System
The hydropneumatic suspension and the braking system are pressurised by a common hydraulic system.
Hydraulic fluid is drawn from the hydraulic reservoir, mounted on the right-hand wing valance, and delivered under pressure to the hydraulic pressure regulator mounted on the engine crankcase.
The height correctors maintain the hydropneumatic suspension at the manually selected height by admitting fluid to, and releasing fluid from, the suspension cylinders according to the movement of the front and rear anti-roll bars to which they are connected.

PULSCO's Hydropneumatic surge control system page
PULSCO Hydropneumatic Surge Control Systems, commonly known as surge arrestors or shock traps, are designed to eliminate damaging shock waves and pressure transients in fluid transporting systems.
PULSCO Hydropneumatic Surge Control Systems are widely recognized by engineers, contractors and system users as the most dependable, predictable, safest and cost efficient form of surge protection available.
Complete protection of the fluid system may require two surge control systems; one on the discharge side of the pump to protect the pipeline from sudden valve closure and pump start-up/shutdown, and one on the suction side of the pump to prevent cavitation and eliminate surges caused by pump shutdown.

 Hydropneumatic suspension
Citroën's André Lefebvre began to experiment with hydraulics for car suspension in the 1940s, and by 1954 he had developed a hydropneumatic system in which a column of oil compressed a bag of nitrogen gas, which served as a spring.
Hydropneumatic suspension has been a major factor in Citroën's supremacy in the art of roadholding and comfort since 1954.
On the Hydropneumatic system, four spheres, one on each wheel, are filled with nitrogen, which is a gas and therefore can be compressed, providing the "spring" action.

One of the most remarkable design features of the CX is its central hydropneumatic system (combination gas and hydraulic fluid) for suspension, steering, and braking.
Through use of hydropneumatics, the CX resolves this problem by utilizing a sphere of compressed inert nitrogen gas at each wheel for its suspension, allowing the wheels of the CX to remain totally compliant with the road's surface.
In addition, the hydropneumatic system of the CX provides for constant ground clearance regardless of the load, adjustable driving height to clear obstructions, automatic jacking for easier tire changing, and far greater durability.
