Hydroxyapatite Crystal Disease Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment by MedicineNet.com
Hydroxyapatite is the major component, and an essential ingredient, of normal bone and teeth.
However, hydroxyapatite crystals are distinctly different from the crystals of pseudogout or gout.
Sometimes, hydroxyapatite crystals can be seen clumped in the fluid of a joint that has developed arthritis.

 What's hydroxyapatite?
Hydroxyapatite is chemically similar to the mineral component of bones and hard tissues in mammals.
Coatings of hydroxyapatite are often applied to metallic implants (most commonly titanium/titanium alloys and stainless steels) to alter the surface properties.
Hydroxyapatite may be employed in forms such as powders, porous blocks or beads to fill bone defects or voids.

Hydroxyapatite monoliths have mechanical integrity and, therefore, can emulate certain functions of hard tissues serve as models for hard tissues, or serve as substrates on which cellular functions can proceed The rationale for investigating monolithic hydroxyapatite is twofold.
Firstly, hydroxyapatite which can be formed in vivo may eventually serve a variety of needs in orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and dentistry; interest has been expressed by clinicians regarding in vivo formation.
In unsubstituted hydroxyapatite, the porosity tends to be monodisperse, and we can produce material which has strengths comparable to sintered hydroxyapatite having the equivalent total porosity.

Hydroxyapatite - Properties and Applications   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The chemical nature of hydroxyapatite lends itself to substitution, meaning that it is not uncommon for non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatites to exist.
Hydroxyapatite is a thermally unstable compound, decomposing at temperature from about 800-1200°C depending on its stoichiometry (see above).
Generally speaking dense hydroxyapatite does not have the mechanical strength to enable it to succeed in long term load bearing applications.

Hydroxyapatite Composite Biomaterials — Evolution and Applications
It is a composite of hydroxyapatite (HA) in high density polyethylene, which mimics bone, itself a composite of hydroxyapatite in collagen.
In a hip prosthesis, the ball of the natural hip joint is replaced with a metal ball on the end of the stem, which extends down the shaft of the bone.
Implants have to be trimmed to fit the patient, however, and with all-hydroxyapatite implants, this is extremely difficult.

Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticle Synthesis and In-Vitro Study of Dentinal Tubule Occlusion
For the first time we are presenting our results on the use of nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite for the infiltration of dentine tubules as a new method of achieving tubule occlusion for the proposed long term prevention of hypersensitivity.
Examination by scanning electron microscopy revealed tubule occlusion using both nano-silica suspensions and hydroxyapatite which was in the form of nano-rods with maximum length 200nm and width 50 nm.
Dual beam focussed ion beam lithography, and the construction of a 3D model from individual sections, is demonstrated as a valuable new technique for determining the depth of tubule infiltration.

 Calcium Hydroxyapatite
Calcium Hydroxyapatite is a freeze-dried (cold processed) source of concentrated calcium obtained from New Zealand.
Hydroxyapatite supplies calcium in the form it occurs in the body.
The microcrystalline structure of calcium hydroxyapatite gives a large surface area from which the minerals may be released from the organic matrix in the intestine.

Porous hydroxyapatite is a complex calcium phosphate salt, made from coral, which is similar to human cancellous (spongy) bone with interconnecting tunnels and no dead-ends.
The porous hydroxyapatite implant can be directly coupled with the artificial eye to improve movement by means of a small peg, which fits into a hole drilled through the conjunctiva (the pink membrane which lines the socket) and into the buried implant.
It is necessary for the hydroxyapatite implant to be fully ingrown with blood vessels (vascularised) prior to the drilling procedure for the fitting of the motility peg.
