Journal of the American Water Resources Association: A triangular model of dimensionless runoff producing rainfall ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Triangular hyetograph models are fit to the mean values for the dimensionless cumulative hyetographs from more than 1,600 storms known to produce runoff on 91 small watersheds in Texas.
Because no substantial relation between the mean of the hyetograph distribution and the storm magnitude as measured by the total storm depth is apparent, and because storm depth is a function of storm frequency level (return period), the authors conclude that the hyetographs suggested here are independent of the frequency level.
Another implication of the non-SCS hyetographs is that unit hydrograph derived peak streamflow is expected to be less because the peak rainfall intensity is less than the peak rainfall intensity exhibited by either of the SCS hyetographs.

A rainfall hyetograph is a graphical representation of the variation of rainfall depth or intensity with time.
Unit hydrograph techniques, however, can account for variability of the intensity throughout a storm although the overall depth for a storm will be the same for a given duration for each method.
The following is an example of a rainfall hyetograph for a 25-year, 24-hour storm duration in Harris County using a one-hour time increment for demonstration only.

The first ordinate value of the precipitation hyetograph must correspond to time zero (or the beginning) of the simulation period and equal 0.0.
For subbasins in which rainfall does not begin until after simulation begins, initial components of the rainfall hyetograph are set to zero (up to the time interval during which rainfall begins).
This procedure creates a hyetograph, depending upon the region of Virginia the basin is in, and knowing the total amount of rainfall and the duration of the rainfall.

Rational Hydrograph Method for Small Urban Watersheds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
In this study, the rational method is expanded into the rational hydrograph method in which the time of concentration is considered as the system memory and the contributing rainfall depth to the present runoff rate is defined as the accumulated precipitation over the past up to the time of concentration.
In doing so, the complete runoff hydrograph can be generated under a continuous nonuniform hyetograph.
When the continuous hyetograph is uniform in time, the rational hydrograph method is reduced to the rational method.

However, it is shown that the performance of the Bartlett-Lewis model is significantly improved, and becomes comparable to that of the scaling model, by introducing a power-law dependence of its cell related parameters (duration and rate of arrivals) on the storm duration.

Theory - Derivation Of The Chicago Storm
The synthetic hyetograph computed by the Chicago method is based on the parameters of an assumed Intensity-Duration-Frequency relationship, i.e.
The asymmetry of the hyetograph is described by a parameter r (where 0 < r < 1) which defines that point within the storm duration td at which the rainfall intensity is a maximum.
Calculation of the discretized rainfall hyetograph is carried out by integrating these equations to obtain a curve of accumulated volume as illustrated in Figure 7-2 below.

A synthetic triangular hyetograph for a large data base of Texas rainfall and runoff is needed.
Synthetic hyetographs are esti- mates of the expected time distribution for a design storm and prin- cipally are used in small watershed hydraulic structure design.
The analysis also suggests that dimensionless cumulative hyetographs are independent of the frequency level or return period of total storm depth and thus are readily used for many design applications.

They are often distinguished by output that includes a single, single-valued (meaning no display of uncertainty) runoff hydrograph computed in response to a single input rainfall hyetograph, usually with a constant timestep.
Frequencies of the input hyetograph are calculated from a single, simple parameter representing highly variable observed rainfall, and the frequency of the computed hydrograph is assumed to be the same.
As a result, the artificial input hyetograph is composed of many combinations of rainfall intensities and time intervals (Huber et al., 1986).

The instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH) is the direct runoff hydrograph (DRH) resulting from a unit depth of an effective precipitation hyetograph (EPH) applied uniformly over a watershed.
A major advantage of an IUH over a unit hydrograph (UH) is that the IUH does not require uniform effective precipitation for a specific period of time.
The direct runoff hydrograph is computed as the convolution of the effective precipitation hyetograph and the IUH kernel function as described by:
