Topic: Hygd

The Heroic Age: The Social Centrality of Women in Beowulf
Wealhtheow and Hygd are both queens and, as hostesses, they both exert influence in the hall (usually thought of as a masculine enclave), influence that does not always coincide with the wishes of their husbands.
The first section will present Wealhtheow and Hygd as hostesses, discussing their place in the structure of the court society shown in the poem, a society that focuses on the hall and the words that are spoken within the hall.
Hygd also held at least some political power, and this is shown most clearly when she attempts to deliver the kingdom of the Geats to Beowulf following Hygelac's death on the battlefield, in effect passing over her own son, Heardred.

She is the total opposite of Wealhtheow and Hygd; in fact, her story is mentioned just after Hygd is introduced; this may have been done to more openly show Hygd’s good qualities.
The novel offers an idea of how a good queen should be, loving, kind and loyal to her king; the idea of a queen (or woman) being married off to end feuds is an accurate depiction of a queen for the time of Beowulf though it is not socially acceptable now.

 Forum—Women Refusing the Gaze
According to Osborn (1999, 49) this queen introduces Thryth's story into the poem as she "contemplates" the actions of the "wicked" Thryth.
Thus Thryth's "rebellion constitutes a direct confrontation with the masculine symbolic order of the poem: "Despite her beauty, Modthryth will not consent to be a feminine spectacle in a masculine arena" (Overing 1990, 104).
Thryth's violent rebellion, then, places her less in "contrast" to such queens as Hygd or Wealhtheow, and more precisely in relation to the ethos governing warrior societies and the expression of their use of violence in the poem.

Not only does the youthful Beowulf contrast with his aged self in the second half, but the older king Hrothgar serves as a foil for the young hero within the first part of the poem.
Hygd, the good queen of the Geats, also serves as a foil for the malicious queen Modthrytho.
The poet jumps quickly, almost illogically, from a description of Hygd to a description of Modthrytho in lines 1927-1962.

Along the walls, at intervals, were placed flaming torches which lighted the vast hall with flickering light, and the smoke from the flares and the fires on the hearths was drawn high to the roof, where it disappeared in the gloomy rafters through a hole cut at the peak.
Around the hall stood wooden benches in tiers, one above the other, and at one end, highest of all, was the table at which Hygelac and Hygd his queen sat in their robes of state.
For here was a Beowulf they had never known before, and they greeted him for the first time as one of themselves, and not as a sullen boy whose strength had been so great that he had been made to seem a fool for it.

The Role of Women in Beowulf
She is first introduced into the story appearing very ladylike and proper:  “Hygd, [Hygelac’s] queen, / was young, a few short years at court, / her mind was thoughtful and her manners sure” (1926-1928).
Feminine characters like Wealhtheow and Hygd are respected members of the mead hall, while the extremely masculine and beastly mother of Grendel is eternally outcast.
The domination of Wealhtheow and Hygd may not be as apparent since they did not put up the fight that Grendel’s mother does to avoid being dominated, but evidence of the “taming” of these two women is clear in the poem.

Beowulf publicly, then the queens Weahltheow and Hygd privately, all participate in such active and selective construction of the self by means of story.
Having weighed Thryth's reprehensible violence while at her father's court, young Hygd has placed against it that "other" story told about Thryth by ale-drinkers (line 1945) after she is happy with the man of high reputation whom she loves (line 1954).
Like the story of Thryth pondered by Hygd, all the stories mentioned in this study that are contemplated by people in the poem share the fact that they are ostensibly about real people who have lived earlier, perhaps personal ancestors, rather than being more abstract myths, parables or fables.

 JiffyNotes: Beowulf: Summary: Historical Context
Thirdly, most scholars believe that Beowulf was composed at West Mercia, off the coast of Offa the Great (King of Mercia from 757 to 796).
One of the reasons for this supposition is that Offa’s ancestor, Offa the Angle, is specifically praised by the poet in a digression, where the poet praises Queen Hygd, Hygelac’s wife, by comparing her to the cruel queen of Offa the Angle.
Beowulf is an epic poem, meant to be recited orally, and though its language is English, it makes mention of Englishmen only twice or thrice.
