When Hygelac's brother Haethcyn is fighting with the Swedes, Hygelac arrives one day too late at Hrefnesholt to save his brother, but manages to rescue the surviving Geatish warriors, who are besieged by the Swedish king Ongentheow.
This event has helped scholars approximate the date of Hygelac's death to ca 516, because the raid was documented by Frankish scribes.
The double identification of Hygelac as either Dane or Geat is not surprising, since Dane seems to have been used as a generic term for Scandinavians (cf.

It is therefore evident that the personality of Hygelac, and the expedition in which, according to Beowuif, he died, belong not to the region of legend or poetic invention, but to that of historic fact.
As the historical character of Hygelac has been proved, it is not unreasonable to accept the authority of the poem for the statement that his nephew Beowulf succeeded Hcardred on the throne of the Gautar, and interfered in the dynastic quarrels of the Swedes.

Response 2: Of the three guesses, I would choose the 'hides of land.' Hygelac's gift is given on the occasion of Beowulf's homecoming; the poem suggests that Beowulf will no longer seek adventures in foreign lands but stay at home and assume leadership responsibilities.
If Hygelac's gift is a sort of imagistic foreshadowing, "seven thousand" [pieces of gold] would be a bad choice, as it leads us by association to the buried hoard that the dragon guards.
The ultimate disappearance of the Geats, however, does not make the gift of land useless, as Beowulf, according to the poem, was a good King in all respects until his last battle.
