Blue Duck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Blue Duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchus) is a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae.
It is in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae, and is the only member of the genus Hymenolaimus.
This 54 cm long species is an endemic resident breeder in New Zealand, nesting in hollow logs, small caves and other sheltered spots.

A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF RECENT DABBLING DUCKS (TRIBE ANATINI) BASED ON COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY
Hymenolaimus was studied in detail (Kear 1972), and Stictonetta was later removed from the Anat- inae on the basis of morphological and behav- ioral comparisons (see Johnsgard 1960a, 1961a, 1962).
These taxonomic revisions were adopted in large part by Johnsgard (1979) in the latest edi- tion of the "Checklist of Birds of the World," although tribes within the Anatinae were omit- ted.
Although it is absent in most "allies" placed in other tribes (Sarkidiornis, Mer- ganetta, Malacorhynchus, Hymenolaimus, and Marmaronetta), it is suggested in several others (Plectropterus, Salvadorina, and Heteronetta).

GENETIC STRUCTURE OF BLUE DUCK (HYMENOLAIMUS MALACORHYNCHOS) POPULATIONS REVEALED BY DNA FINGERPRINTING
DNA-fingerprinting analysis of Blue Ducks (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos) with two minisatellite probes indicated a decrease in genetic similarity (proportion of DNA bands shared) as geographic separation between samples increased.
The genetic similarity between individuals from different regions (0.17-0.24) is within the range of the genetic similarities found within populations of other avian species.

Cedar Creek Literature: Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The mallard-sized Blue Duck Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos, endemic to New Zealand, is found mostly on rivers of steep gradient, a distinctive and linear habitat subjected to brief and dramatic changes in flow at any time of year.
Adult ducks live year-round as pairs confined to exclusive 0.5-1.5 km territories along the river bed.
Both sexes are highly philopatric and birds resident in one catchment are effectively separate from those adjacent.

It is particularly suitable for birds like the kaka (Nestor meridionalis VU), kereru or New Zealand wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandia) and falcon (Falco novaeseelandiae) that range widely in search of seasonal food sources (Hilton-Taylor 2000).
The relatively unmodified uplands are a stronghold for many bird species like the great spotted kiwi (Apteryx haastii VU) and blue duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos VU), now gone from more modified lowland areas.
Farewell Spit, at the tip of the northern coast, is the longest sandspit in the country with the largest intertidal sandflat system.

Stifftail ducks (Oxyurinae) offer one such opportunity to study correlated character evolution and function in the context of phylogenetic reconstruction.
Morphological analyses place stifftail ducks as part of a large clade of diving ducks that includes the sea ducks (Mergini), Hymenolaimus, Merganetta, and Tachyeres, and possibly the pochards (Aythyini).
Molecular analyses, on the other hand, place stifftails far from other diving ducks and suggest, moreover, that stifftails are polyphyletic.
