 HYMISKVIÐA 05
Hymir lives to the east of Élivágar, "at heaven's end", suggesting that by Élivágar is meant the circular ocean which surrounds the earth (Miðgarðr), and separates it from the outlying Giant-lands (Jötunheimar, Útgarðar).
Hymir is also mentioned in Lokasenna 34 (Hymis meyjar "Hymir's maidens"), Haustlöng 9 (áttrunnr Hymis "Hymir's kinsman" = Þjazi), and Haraldskvæði 2 (Hymis hausreytir "Hymir's head-plucker", a raven-kenning of dubious provenance - see commentary on stanza 30).
He achieves this by nimbly replacing "father" with "kinsman" (which alliterates nicely with "kettle") - and then stating in a footnote that Týr is the son of Hymir's wife, "some goddess, possibly, who is united with the giant against her will".

Tyr (Old Norse: Týr) is the god of warfare and battle in Norse mythology, portrayed as a one-handed man. He was a son of either Odin or Hymir.
A trace of their relationship may be seen in the appearance of Tyr as Odin's son in Norse mythology, and also in Anglo-Saxon, if Tiw is identified with Saxnot (Seaxneat), the 'war-god' and son of Woden, who was revered as the ancestor of the Saxons.
In an earlier version, Tyr may have been the son of Hymir, as he is in Hymiskviða (cf.

Tyr, the god of war and justice, knew just where to obtain such an item: his father, the giant Hymir, had one that was “a league deep” (that would be about three and a half miles—certainly large enough to keep the gods drunk for a few millennia).
Hymir’s wife whispered a word of advice to Thor: “Try again; this time, throw it at Hymir’s head, which is much harder than any goblet.” Thor did as he was told, and the goblet broke.
Hymir was upset that his goblet was broken, but nevertheless conceded that Thor had outwitted him, and offered him the great cauldron as his reward—provided, naturally, that he could carry it.
