Hype (or hyperbole) is a common marketing technique in the information technology industry and other technology industries.
There is usually hype at the introduction of any new technology, but only after some time has passed can it be judged as true hype or justified acclaim.
Hype can be generated both by companies seeking financial investment or gain from their emerging technology, or academic researchers seeking notoriety for their research.

Hyperbole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In show business, hyperbole (known as hype or media hype) is the practice of spending money on public relations in an attempt to bolster public interest in (for example) a movie, television show, or performing artist.
However, some sources insist that its origin is early 20th century narcotics slang and that it is a shortening and alteration from hypodermic.
The "hype" has been scientifically studied in the dissertation The Grammar of the Hype by Johan Cronehed.

The first phase of a Hype Cycle is the "technology trigger" or breakthrough, product launch or other event that generates significant press and interest.

A DAY IN THE HYPE OF AMERICA, a feature documentary filmed entirely on December 31st 1999, offers a savvy critique of the hype and hysteria that made the arrival of the millennium such an anticlimax.
In the dusty expanse of Southern Arizona, Jacque Zaleski, the eccentric leader of a community of Wicca survivalists, is putting the finishing touches on her eco-friendly ranch in preparation for Y2K.
A Day in the Hype of America is not only an astonishingly polished first feature documentary, it’s also a knowing look behind the curtain on one of the most over-anticipated days in recent history: New Year’s Eve, 1999.

It's my hope that future musicians who are trying to make real music as opposed to Spice Girls pap and that ilk will look at this documentary and try not to make the same mistakes, and allow the hype to overwhelm what could have been a real musical revolution.
