Hype! - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
is a documentary directed by Doug Pray about the popularity of grunge music in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.
The title of this film, minus the exclaimation point, was swiped from a fanzine that circulated in the Northwest at the time called " Hype Magazine ".
It incorporates interviews and rare concert footage to trace the steps of grunge from its subversive inception in neighborhood basements to its explosion as a pop culture phenomenon.

BELIEVE THE HYPE? THE GAME'S THE DOCUMENTARY.
The Documentary suggests that the Game has a mildly active social conscience -- he dedicates one track to the slain sister of Venus and Serena Williams, and he celebrates the birth of his son on the disc's finale.
If The Documentary was just the work of a marginal talent on a major label, we could toss it aside and move on.
The Documentary is an expensive amalgam of the biggest, most popular sounds going on in commercial hip-hop today; this is one polished piece of product.

1171 - eleven seventyone production group
He served on the documentary jury of the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, has appeared on numerous panels on independent filmmaking, was a guest on Elvis Mitchell’s “The Treatment” (NPR), and has taught filmmaking classes at several colleges.
HYPE!”, Doug’s award-winning film about the emergence and explosion of the Seattle rock music scene, also debuted at Sundance (1996), was released theatrically in over 100 American cities, and went on to receive international distribution in all media (Lions Gate/Artisan).
Doug Pray has directed a wide variety of documentary films, but he is best known for his two 35mm feature films that explored musical subcultures.

 Salon "Hype": Harboring Grunge
And while "Hype" condemns MTV for propagating the myth that grunge begins and ends with Kurt Cobain, there's not the slightest suggestion that Cobain was anything less than the patron saint of musical integrity.
Nevermind that "Hype" itself, by the very nature of its being, is part of the media it so eagerly blames for ruining the Seattle sound.
"Hype" wants you to think that a few interviews with some less popular bands and some poorly shot concert footage lend the film an insider legitimacy and credibility that excuse it from the same accountability it demands from other media.

The Advocate - Doug Pray Q&A
Pray, a documentary film director, will be at the Maryland Film Festival for a screening of his new movie, "Sundance20" on May 4 at 3:30 p.m.
The documentary chronicles the devlopment of Robert Redford's Sundance Labs, which helps filmmakers develop their own projects without studio pressure.
The experience was wonderful, but it's really challenging to make a documentary that had to fit a pre-existing format.

 Fahrenhype 9/11 movie review - AGGRESSIVE-VOICE.COM
In "Fahrenheit" we see him describing the pain he suffered as a result of the accident while touring in Iraq, but in "HYPE" he clears it up by saying that he was describing the pain he suffered when not on medication as a result of the accident, not the war that he still supports.
Curiously, "HYPE" never disputes that point, but says it's not the federal government that funds their state police, therefore Bush had nothing to do with any of their fallbacks.
I've determined that "HYPE" succeeds in providing a fresh counterargument to Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," and I wish there was one of these for all his movies.

 Mo-Blog: Fahren"hype" 9/11
In "Hype", as a response to Moore's ridiculing Bush's frequent ranch vacations, there is a great computer animated sequence showing a tiny dot jumping all over the US map, showing how busy the president is during one of these exemplary vacations.
But Hype, whose main aim is to refute the facts brought up in Heit, goes beyond that: it presents other facts contradicting Moore's, and introduces him as a blatant liar.
The strong point about Hype is that it tries its best to look fair: very rarely the interviewees call Moore's statements "lies" (they call them "false"), and Moore's obesity is never mentioned (as is usually brought up in extremist right-wing circles).

ITV said it was "still standing by the contents of the documentary".
Proceedings were suspended pending the end of the singer's child abuse trial, which cleared him of all charges.

 The Hype and the History
The documentary makes a cohesive attempt to explain the worldview that led Nixon and his men to commit their abuses of power, and the portrait that it paints is of a man who would have ordered much more than a burglary if he thought it would serve his aims.
Beyond the hype over the Magruder confession, however, the greatest contribution of "Plus 30" could be its focused portrayal of the Watergate burglary not as an aberration but as part of a pattern.
Watergate is often, and even in this documentary, put forward as the ultimate triumph of our system, a "testament to the strength of America's constitutional democracy," as the makers of the film put it.

Al-Muhajabah's Islamic Blogs: Hyping Terror For Fun, Profit - And Power
According to Curtis' BBC documentary, Wolfowitz's group, known as "Team B," came to the conclusion that the Soviets had developed several terrifying new weapons of mass destruction, featuring a nuclear-armed submarine fleet that used a sonar system that didn't depend on sound and was, thus, undetectable with our current technology.
Curtis' documentary suggests that the War On Terror is just as much a fiction as were the super-WMDs this same group of neocons said the Soviets had in the 70s.
Similarly, according to this documentary, the War On Terror is the same sort of scam, run for many of the same reasons, by the same people.

The acclaimed documentary Brass On Fire which tells the story of "the fastest romany gypsie brass band in the world" who have showcased their sound from their tiny village in a remote part of Romania throughout the world is showing at Cinetwin from September 4th (see them play live at Club Quattro Aug 24).
The last two decades have seen a resurgence of interest in documentary and viewers are rediscovering the excitement and pleasures of the non-fiction film.
Michael Moore may currently be the world's most high profile documentary film maker, but he isn't the only one making independent political documentaries, nor the only one who is reaching beyond arthouse audiences.

 Review
But to actually have a documentary dive into different areas around the U.S. and talk to people waiting in line for 42 days and to just see all the craziness behind it is incredible.
But it's when the hype alters the opinion of what should be a good movie that it gets to be too much.
AOTC had only three years of waiting, and the hype was considerably low-key on purpose.

 After Friends World
The 22-year-old documentary filmmaker and soon to be graduate of the Friends World program at Southampton College is the creative force behind Global Griot Productions, an internationally-minded film group dedicated to the promotion of perspective.
A Day in the Hype of America, was completed only weeks before the festival and screened to a packed house at the Columbus Cinematheque on Thursday evening.
The project was inspired by a chance glance at a photography book at a garage sale that presented the work of several photographers dispatched to various regions around the country to capture "life" in the span of 24 hours.

Hip-Hop Kings - The Game "The Documentary Review" HOTT
But, when the hype dwindles, the album is all that remains and judging by The Documentary, The Game is more than ready to play ball.
Finally, the greatest hindrance to The Documentary is Game’s ruthless, persistent and unrelenting namedropping, which goes on from beginning to the last drum fades.
The rap climate is chocked full of hype these days, but no one has quite capitalized on it the way The Game has.

 Modulations
Modulations major difference from a film like Hype however is that the pace of electronic music is much more rampant than that of rock, and thus so became the tempo for the documentary.
It was reminiscent in it's structure to Hype, a documentary about the Seattle Grunge Movement.
The documentary's visuals begin quickly as does the accompanying music.

Festival Hype - Bid to show Jackson documentary
However, the defence argued that the documentary constituted inadmissable hearsay.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Hype! Deseret Morning News Web edition
"Hype!" a documentary from former music-video director Doug Pray, attempts to rectify that situation, as well as explain exactly how grunge came about and how it became so popular.
"Hype!" is unrated, but would probably receive an R for profanity, some concert violence, brief nudity and shots of nude cartoons and one vulgar joke on a T-shirt.
Pray (aided by Brian Levy) actually puts "Hype!" together much like a three-act play — beginning with pre-grunge Seattle, then moving on to the rise of Sub Pop Records, Nirvana's first home, and ending with a surprisingly thoughtful look at grunge's impact on Seattle.

 LOST FILM FEST 9.0 - PHILADELPHIA - AUG 17-22
This picturesque documentary is an exhilarating group portrait of four self-styled tramps and hobos who follow their bliss by illegally hopping freight trains that traverse some of the country's most beautiful terrain.
PoetÕs resulting documentary covers the bases Ð from the use of art as a political challenge, to the concept of national embarrassment in the face of a civilized world, to the shit-disturbing narcissism of Schlingensief himself.
The style of the documentary inter-cuts interviews from scores of black punk rockers from all over the usa with scenes from our four protagonists' lives.

The Stranger - Film - Film Shorts - Film Shorts
The subject of this documentary, Bruce Yamashita, was driven out of the Marine Corps by racial harassment; after attending law school, he won a legal and politcal battle with the military which ended in his being commissiond as a captain.
This middle-of-the-road, boring documentary is not actually about Burning Man, it merely uses Burning Man as an excuse to show a handful of uninteresting people sharing life stories on screen, while having the occasional flame-based art project or naked hippie in the background.
This screening of a documentary about lesbian and gay Arab- and Persian-Americans is a benefit for the locally produced feature film Writing Home.

Wired News: Documentary Focuses on Stories, Not Stars, of Seattle
Even with a title that seems partly ironic, a documentary film about the Seattle, Washington, music scene is suspicious.
Subcultures today also have a new way to counter media hype: They can tell their own stories on the Web.

 portland imc - 2004.06.30 - Fahren-Hype 911: Moore's Movie: Highly Promotion,yet the discredited 9-11 Official Story!
Outside the theatre where I watched the documentary there were activists seeking to use it to attract support for anti-Bush campaigns and to register to vote when the system is so rigged that voting is a quaint irrelevance.
Christine Rose, the documentary filmmaker, was present to answer questions about the film for over an hour after the screening to an inspired audience of young and old.
I have seen BBC documentaries about the government/media slanting of the invasion of Iraq and the way the U.S. authorities are targeting the poor and jobless to join the military that tell the same story that Moore does.

 Amazon.com: Video: Hype! (1996)
After watching HYPE for the first time last year, I was left in awe at the beautifully created masterpiece that I had witnessed.
Packed with witty interviews with band members, record execs, and Seattle music aficionados, much of the film places a welcome spotlight on the bands that didn't become part of the national "grunge" phenomenon and scores of live clips and rare recordings show that "the Seattle Sound" didn't begin with Nirvana or end with Soundgarden.
It came as a shock to me that this film was largely unheard of, and very upsetting when I tried to get my hands on a copy for myself but could not find one.

Pearl Jam Synergy - Hype! movie review
is a terrific documentary that loosely chronicles the Pacific Northwest rock music scene in the early '90s and qualifies as a must-see film for all Pearl Jam fans.
As the artistry seemed to become reduced to "grunge lite" elevator music and flannel fashion lay- outs in Vogue magazine, the musicians and their support people developed an attitude of clownishness to survive the media frenzy.
It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Idaho in January 1996 but was unable to find a national distributor until it was shown a few months later at the Seattle International Film Festival.

 Movie Review - Hype
, a documentary about the the birth, growth and death-by-exposure of Seattle's rock 'n' roll legacy, from filmmaker Doug Pray and his producer-buddy Steven Helvey.
Made in a stripped-down, unpretentious style, the movie gleefully captures the loud, chaotic, rude, funny, angry, irreverent, largely homemade spirit that fueled a creative explosion in the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s.
It came to be known as ''grunge,'' although the people who invented it learned to hate that word.

DVD Review - The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg
All that being said, I must admit the film is not as good as the hype says it is. But in saying this, I make it sound as if the film itself isn't all that good.
It leaves the conclusion that this should be applauded as a film worth seeing, an ably crafted documentary amidst dozens of mediocre, or just plain bad, documentaries.
This not being the ultimate in mainstream genres for most moviegoers, it says something that many are even aware of this biography of the great Jewish ballplayer who stood tall in an era rife with anti-Semitism.

 Film Threat - Reviews
Thankfully, although this sprawling documentary examines seemingly every possible explanation for the "Star Wars" phenomenon, it doesn't dare come up with a one-size-fits-all answer.
It also effectively demonstrates the universal need humans have to belong by interviewing those for whom the ordeal of waiting and the fellowships they've formed while waiting are more important than the movie for which they're ostensibly standing in line.
In the end, "A Galaxy Far, Far Away" shadows its parent films in that it's just good clean fun for the whole family.
