Hyperbole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In show business, hyperbole (known as hype or media hype) is the practice of spending money on public relations in an attempt to bolster public interest in (for example) a movie, television show, or performing artist.
An early example of the use of this slang term is in the 1988 song "Don't Believe the Hype" by the hip hop group Public Enemy.
In Latin: manducare, which originally meant "to eat like the greedy comedy character Manducus", was used so often in Vulgar Latin as slang for ordinary eating that it evolved into French manger and Italian mangiare, which merely mean "to eat".

DVD Verdict Review - Hype Williams: The Videos, Volume 1
The point is that Hype himself gets it, and that even though his medium amounts to little more than big-budget commercials for CDs, he's stretching the boundaries of that medium and salting it with the craft and vision of legitimate film.
You won't learn much about making music videos; most of Hype's comments are innocuous and uninsightful scrapbook stuff ("this was a fun video to make" or "this happened at a great time in my life"), but occasionally he'll offer an interesting tidbit about the various performers with whom he works.
Williams guilty of gratuitous displays of fisheye cinematography and nubile young women in glossy string bikinis.

DVD Review: Hype Williams - The Videos
One of the directors most responsible for these visually striking and often gorgeous videos is Hype Williams, a director whose every video could easily be called "larger than life".
Given what Williams has been able to accomplish on a small budget for the music videos that he's done, I'm surprised that he hasn't moved onto directing feature films.
Hype Williams offers commentary for each of the videos - while his comments are often insightful and interesting, there are periods where he gets a bit too caught up in praising the artists he worked with.

Watch any of Hype Williams’s music videos on his new DVD collection The Videos (Palm Pictures) with the sound off and what you hear is what you see: the visual music of color.
As Williams himself notes, his way of hip-hop seeing — the fisheye lenses, the cartoonish facial close-ups, the stuttering cyborg bodies — is now the way that TRL sees, with the Britneys and ’N Syncs all peeping bug-eyed and head-cocked into the lens like Missy in her inflatable "Supa Dupa Fly" bubble suit.
On the DVD, Williams acknowledges that he rejects rap music’s quest for realism in favor of an otherworldly visual hip-hop surrealism that though never managing to feel removed from life on the block can always imagine alternate ways of being.

Hype Williams, an acclaimed video director who has worked with Sean "Puffy" Combs, LL Cool J and others, simultaneously illuminates the lure of the street and the spiritual crises of the modern age in Belly.
Williams, directing from his own script, employs an off-kilter visual flair that charges the film from the start, as a rapid-fire succession of images from the thug life is accompanied by a voiceover confession, told in rhyme: "I sold my soul to the devil.
In Belly, Williams, a graduate of music videos making his feature-film debut as writer and director, uses rapid cuts, multiple images, superimpositions, slow motion and highly dramatic lighting among other devices as he assembles an assortment of rap artists in a tale set in 1999 among mostly undereducated urban fl teen-agers...

Williams worked with the majority of the celebrated R&B and hip-hop artists whose deaths were untimely and early: The Notorious B.I.G. 2Pac Shakur, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Left Eye, and Aaliyah (the latter died in a plane crash on her way home from shooting the Williams-directed video.)
Williams began his career as an art director; one of his first jobs was designing the sets and costumes for the first TLC video, "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg", in 1991.
In 1998, Williams directed his first theatrical feature film, ''Belly''; the film was mildly received by both critics and audiences.
