The thyroid is a tiny gland located in the neck that has an enormous impact on the health and well-being of the entire person.
Optimal functioning of the thyroid gland is dependent on several factors: correct function of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, an adequate supply of iodine and conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3).
Hypothyroidsim is characterized by an underactive thyroid gland, and by the lack of thyroid hormone.

Diseases of Ductless Glands--Signs in Iris
The thyroid gland is a double lobed gland, connected by a narrow bridge, situated in front of and on both sides of the trachea at the base of the neck.
Over stimulation of the thyroid gland frequently occurs through toxins produced by some septic disease, but in such cases the increased secretions from the gland may be needed to neutralize the toxic materials generated by the inflammatory processes; in other words, the hyperactivity of the thyroid is protective and will diminish as the disease subsides.
The thyroid gland itself is moderately enlarged at first and rather soft and elastic, but it becomes harder and firmer as a result of the proliferation of connective tissue.

It is a state in which the thyroid gland releases more than the normal amount of thyroid hormones into the blood stream.
The two thyroid hormones, thyroxine and tri-iodo-thyronine, act on all the cells in the body that are consuming energy, to speed up the processes of fuel consumption.
Normally, the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood is carefully controlled so that these processes occur at a correct and steady rate.

The thyroid is important in multiple metabolic processes and, because basal metabolism declines with age, the thyroid use to be implicated in the aging process.
However, although both hypo- and hyper- thyroidism are more common in older adults, which indicates a loss of reserve, normal healthy elderly individuals are able to maintain a euthyroid state.
It is important to realize that many non-thyroidal illnesses influence thyroid tests and that signs and symptoms of both hypo and hyper thyroidism are often much more subtle in older persons.
