Topic: Hypercalvinism

Strange BaptistFire » Blog Archive » SBC, the Presidency, and Hypercalvinism
I am against hypercalvinism as one could possibly be, but I am not sure those who are throwing this label around are using it in its historical sense.
While the supposed “threat” of hypercalvinism has yet to be substantiated, one major threat has been–the threat of pragmatism.
We need to press them to substantiate their repeated claims that hypercalvinism is a significant threat to the gospel and prevalent in the SBC.

It is one thing to stand for the truth, but to continually harp on the split and bring up the same ideas over and over to defend their Hypercalvinism is tedious at best.
The only historical figures that agree with the PRC and Englesma's position is the advocates surrounding John Gill - and at that point only in some manner.
Engelsma, in trying to protect his view and his denomination from Hypercalvinism, simply admits to it by their position and this book.

 Response to Accusation of Hyper-Calvinism
I found out that I have been accused of hypercalvinism on this list, so I thought it would be good to join so you can hear directly from me instead of someone who claims to know what I believe.
I agree that Thomas's definition is the traditional definition of hypercalvinism, with one addition: hypercalvinists believe that there can be a time-lapse of days, months, or even years between regeneration and conversion; the gospel is not relevant in regeneration.
The cornerstone of the hypercalvinist belief is the denial that all men are responsible to repent and believe the gospel, with its logical conclusion that evangelizing the lost is to be avoided.

 The Exercise of Saving Faith
One developing battleground between biblical Calvinism and hypercalvinism today is over Gods part and mans part in salvation.
In a day when hypercalvinism was in vogue, Spurgeon went against the prevailing trend and offered the gospel freely and to all people, calling on each to surrender to the Lordship of Christ, believe the gospel, and be saved.
At the end of a message based on 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (God our savior, who will have all men to be saved, and to come to a knowledge of the truth.), Spurgeon said this, [God] will not save any man except he forsake his sins, and turns to Him with a full purpose of heart.

Those who are content to see a man's destiny as something that neither he nor anyone else can alter gravitate to hypercalvinism.
Hypercalvinism is the extreme position which asserts that since the destiny of each soul is fixed by eternal decree, appointing him to an inescapable place either among the elect or the damned, salvation has nothing to do with what men themselves do or desire.
The preaching of hypercalvinism creates the impression that a sinner cannot be sure that God will save him, even though he comes to God with an earnest desire to be saved.

OK, so now you want to redefine your position of what hypercalvinism is. Know that this is then where you are going with it....a redefinition from your previous post.
Tsk, tsk, you edited Calvin's words to suit your interpretation of what he meant by double predestination when in that whole chapter, to soften his meaning it is clear Calvin would not have edited it the way you do...
You made several refutations of BenK's points by saying "that is hypercalvinism, not mine" to which I showed Calvin DID say what BenK said, now you say, uh no, hypercalvinism is somthing else and take it away A4H.

The Will of God - Hyper-Calvinism Versus Historic Calvinism By John Hendryx
In other words I believe Calvin and others have always themselves believed that God wants people to repent and be saved on a preceptive level even though they may not have considered or expressed the nuance we are exploring here.
But rather, I am criticizing a form of hypercalvinism which takes this extraordinary truth of God's eternal decree and brings it into the realm of the prescriptive will of God.
This is exemplified by those hypercalvinists who have have said that since God does not want to save the reprobate so we must therefore never preach the gospel to the non-elect but must find those who are elect and preach only to them.

Ergun Caner’s unprovoked charge of “hypercalvinism” is matched by other battle-drawing comments from, among others, Malcom Yarnell of Southwestern Serminary, who recently preached against the evils of hyper-calvinism, which he defined as not having altar calls.
While this does not surprise me, what does surprise me is the lack of sophistication and the lack of Scripture in these critiques.
Let’s face it, Caner and Yarnell know better than to equate all Calvinism as hyper- and they know better than to define hyperCalvinism as a lack of an invitation system in the morning worship service.

I wish you would get your dictionary and look up those three words – "Calvinism," "Hypercalvinism," and "Arminianism." These names don't mean a thing in the world to the average individual, but they are names for systems of doctrines that are being preached today.
Let me tell you something in the very beginning – Hypercalvinism leads to fatalism, and Arminianism leads to despair, if you carry either one out to its extremity.

 THE SECOND COMMANDMENT
There are far too many reformed and evangelical leaders who take a hard edge in regard to their own particular understanding of specific doctrines and fail to allow any brethren the necessary freedom of conscience to disagree with their wisdom.
I am reminded of current phrases and concepts that echo across the internet, second reformation, R.O.S.E.S and various brands of hypercalvinism and theonomy which some groups take greater pride in than the fact that Christ died for them.
One doesn't have to read very far to appreciate how great indeed is the grace and mercy of our Lord that we can be saved in spite of our petty applications of the grace received and mercy shown.

The stranglehold of modernism and ecumenism needed to be broken.
These needs remain today, but made more acute by the emergence of new and virulent ‘isms’, like postmodernism, neo-evangelicalism, charismaticism, hypercalvinism and neo-Pharisaism.
Moreover, counselling methods, which syncretise Christian truth with heresy, and unscriptural church growth methods have added to the deluge of unbelief and apostasy that is drowning many a seminary today.

I agree with a number of points that have been made, especially concerning the need for better discipleship of those who are baptized and a more meaningful church membership (a point I made in the paper).
I also have come to believe that the term "hyperCalvinism" is just too controversial and understood to mean too many different things to different people to be very useful in the discussion.
The primary concern that I voiced in the paper was that Southern Baptists give the priority to evangelism and missions that the Great Commission commands and that we practiced in the past.
