Supreme Power is a revamp of a revamp of a pastiche.
The Squadron Supreme were obvious analogues to DC's Justice League of America, with characters like Hyperion, Nighthawk and Power Princess taking the place of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman; the Squadron lived in a parallel dimension to the Marvel Universe and would occasionally appear to interact with Marvel's Avengers.
The characters in Supreme Power are similar only in name to their Squadron Supreme antecedents, which raised the question in many fans' minds of why they had to be used for this story.

Not that this is likely to bother anyone, because let's face it, most people are rather more interested in the JLA characters than in the limited degree of personality which the Squadron had acquired in their own right.
The previous appearances of the Squadron Supreme are of negligible relevance because Straczynski is merely reusing the name and the general concept of paralleling the JLA.

Supreme Power is off to an excellent start, and it marks a high point for the comic-book writing of Straczynski and the quality of the loosely-grouped MAX imprint, matching up to its impressive sales numbers with a solid debut.
Frank's work does continue to look a little strange around the eyes, as many of the characters (notably Hyperion and his two adoptive mothers) seem to be wide-eyed all the time, but in general this is pretty amazing-looking artwork.
And including a reprint of the first Squadron Supreme story seems wrong-headed; it's obviously material that isn't aimed at the crowd that's going to pick up this new take on the characters, and all it does is reinforce these old versions that the creators are so clearly trying to get away from.
