 Colin Glassey on Dan Simmons
Hyperion was justly awarded the Hugo as the finest science fiction novel published that year and Simmons added to his fame by publishing a sequel called The Fall of Hyperion less than a year later.
Given that the new book is set some 260 years in the future, this is quite plausible, though it does seem odd.
All in all, a good book, and it is good to see Simmons return to the field which he had left for so long.

The Void and the Word: Dan Simmons' Complete Hyperion Cantos
Both "Hyperion" (1818) and "The Fall of Hyperion" (1819) are ambitious, incomplete attempts to create epic poems around a classical theme: the overthrow of the race of Titans--among them Saturn, Uranus, and the sun god Hyperion--by the gods of ancient Greek mythology (Apollo, Zeus, etc.).
The narrative opens with the arrival on Hyperion of seven travelers, "pilgrims" chosen by the Hegemony Council and The Church of the Shrike to visit the planet at a critical moment in its, and the Hegemony's, history.
The Hyperion books are particularly striking examples of Simmons' ability to assimilate and make use of a wide variety of literary and intellectual sources.

 BookPage Interview
Spanning four novels and many centuries of real and imagined galactic history, the Hyperion saga is an astonishing achievement, overbrimming with adventure, lyricism, and insight.
Simmons will return to his Hyperion universe once more in an upcoming novella, part of a set of stories by a select group of science fiction authors who have been asked to revisit their now-classic worlds just one more time.
In fact, when I first started writing "Hyperion," I knew I'd have to deal with Keats' long poems, "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion." I really appreciated his theme of life evolving from one race of gods to another, with one power having to give way to another, as Hyperion must.

A Profile of Dan Simmons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
But it was the publication, and best-selling success, of the "Hyperion books" which secured Simmons' fame as a science fiction luminary.
On the whole, Hyperion's popularity might be attributed to the fact that it is the perfect Rosetta stone for those unfamiliar with science fiction.
Although the writing of another book in the Hyperion saga, and the translation of the first two volumes onto CD-ROM, would be enough to keep many writers busy for years to come, Dan Simmons continues turning out short stories as well.

Book Reviews: The Rise of Endymion; Finity's End
As Raul struggles to complete his mission and meet up with Aenea, the Pax and the TechnoCore put their plan into action, starting a chain of events that could lead to ultimate doom, not only for Aenea and Raul, but for every sentient being in the Hegemony universe.
There are two other problems with the book that make it a less satisfying read than its predecessors.
The other problem is difficult to articulate, but it seemed as if unraveling all of the mysteries of the previous books, particularly the nature of the Shrike, has robbed the story of some of its grandeur.

What sets this book apart from the sea of other "mommy-daddy-love-me" books is the global perspective, that even though people may be far away and live very differently than we do here in the United States, a parentÕs love for a child is universal and precious and respecting that is part of creating peace.
First off, the packaging of this book is pure genius: bound in a material that verges on tight tweed, with the character depicted in gold cloisonné, carrying this book around is as much of a fashion statement as it is a literary statement.
This book uses a lively combination of comic book narrative and scintillating sidelines to follow along as an inspired teacher time-travels in order to fully celebrate the contributions of a great and powerful culture with her class.

Frost relied on the resources of the United States Golf Association, particularly its chief historian, Randon Jerris; Robert Donovan, executive director of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund; and J. Louis Newell of The Country Club.
