  Hyperion
The Hyperion Cantos is a tetralogy of science fiction novels by Dan Simmons.
Hyperion is the name of a planet where much of the action in the series takes place.
Hyperion is also tectonically dead, and thus there is no continental drift and no significant electromagnetic field (which implies that a compass does not work).

Amazon.co.uk: Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos): Books: Dan Simmons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Hyperion is the first of a much-heralded two-part work -- including the The Fall of Hyperion--about the last days of a vibrant yet self-destructive galactic civilization of humans called the Hegemony.
Hyperion is a complex and intelligently written novel set in the far future, where opposing cultures are on the brink of war and where a small band of pilgrims are journeying to the mysterious Time Tombs.
Hyperion reads like Canterbury Tales, with each chapter of the story being told by one of the seven pilgrims on their way to meet a monster of mythic proportions, the Shrike.

 Simmons, Hyperion Cantos (005simd1)
The first book, Hyperion, introduces us to a culture that is completely dependent upon a combination of instantaneous communication and relatively slow physical transport.
The Fall of Hyperion picks up this theme and destroys the means of communication in some of the best-realized space battle scenes I've read.
The Hyperion Cantos avoid this trap by continuously evolving along multiple technological and sociological fronts.

'Hyperion' is centered on the six pilgrims' tales, their pasts, the terrible needs which drive them to confront what is almost certain death--or worse.
While I knew "Hyperion" had a sequel, I had NO IDEA it would end with the sort of cliff-hanger it did, which was both aggravating, and strangely moving (or maybe a better word is touching?) at the same time.
The Hyperion Cantos is huge and challenging to read, but not easy to put down either.

Amazon.co.uk: The Hyperion Omnibus: "Hyperion", "The Fall of Hyperion" (Gollancz): Books: Dan Simmons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
"Hyperion" focuses on the history of each pilgram and the reason they are on this mission, flicking back towards real-time events every-so often.
"The Fall of Hyperion" no longer re-tells the past of the pilgrams but instead focuses on a poet from history whom is "reborn" via genetic engineering who is able to see events of the pilgrams live.
I personally felt "Hyperion" to be much the better book, but I only read "The Fall of Hyperion" to finish the story.

Dan Simmons - Author's Official Web Site
From the multiple award-winning author of the Hyperion Cantos – one of the most acclaimed and popular series in contemporary science fiction – comes ILIUM, a huge and powerful epic of high-tech gods, human heroes, total war, and the extraordinary transcendence of ordinary beings.
From the towering heights of Olympos Mons on Mars, the mighty Zeus and his immortal family of gods, goddesses, and demigods look down upon a momentous battle, observing – and often influencing-the legendary exploits of Paris, Achilles, Hector, Odysseus, and the clashing armies of Greece and Troy.
In "Orphans of the Helix," a brilliantly realized coda to the Hyperion saga, a band of interstellar pilgrims make an unexpected detour, and find themselves enmeshed in an ongoing - and unwitting -- conflict between two alien cultures.

The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, and the sequel The Rise of Endymion extend the original Hyperion pair into a quartet.
There will be discussion about the book and its merits, structure, and influence on the field at the convention, so this might be a good time to go back and refresh your memories of it!
