In medicine, combined hyperlipidemia (or - aemia) is a commonly occurring form of hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol levels) characterised by increased LDL and triglyceride concentrations, often accompanied by decreased HDL.
Familiar combined hyperlipidemia (FCH) is the familiar occurrence of this disorder, probably caused by polymorphism s in molecules and enzyme s that participate in lipoprotein metabolism, such as ApoCII and ApoCIII and CETP (cholesterylester transferring protein).

Hyperlipidemia is as common as hypertension in the United States.
Nevertheless, many questions about hyperlipidemia remain inadequately explained, including why atherosclerotic disease develops in persons with "normal" cholesterol levels, whether therapy is beneficial in persons with average lipid levels, and how lifestyle change and adherence to therapeutic regimens may be effectively accomplished.

Lipids Online Slides: hyperlipidemia, simvastatin, triglyceride, niacin
Combined use of a statin with niacin is an attractive option for the treatment of hyperlipidemia since these agents, used individually, have had favorable effects in clinical trials with regard to reductions in cardiovascular events and improvements in the progression or regression of coronary lesions.
Recent trials with statins have shown that patients with mixed hyperlipidemia and low HDL-C levels achieve greater increases in HDL-C with statin therapy than was previously recognized.
Because of the different molecular mechanisms by which niacin and fibrates increase HDL-C, it is not surprising that the combination of niacin plus a statin, or a fibrate plus a statin, leads to greater increases in HDL-C along with other favorable effects on the overall lipid profile.

They were either newly diagnosed with hyperlipidemia or already receiving lipid-lowering drugs but not yet at their target lipid goal.
