A hyphen is equivalent to a minus sign....
If the problem is with printing a minus sign, such as in a Word document, and the hyphen is not close enough to what you want, you may wish to try changing your font, if not for the entire document, then at least for this one symbol.
To Steve R Jones: The keys to refer to are hyphens, not minus signs.

 Hyphen
Also known as a dash, minus sign, or negative; the hyphen (-) is a punctuation mark commonly found on the underscore key next to the "0" computer keyboard key.
In many word processor software programs an optional hyphen is commonly automatically inserted by a program when a word is cut off by the program because it has reached the end of the page.
In computers, the hyphen is commonly used in computer programming and mathematics to subtract one number from another.

 Info Node: (texinfo)minus
In the fixed-width font used by Info, `@minus{}' is the same as a hyphen.
You should not use `@minus{}' inside `@code' or `@example' because the width distinction is not made in the fixed-width font they use.
When you use `@minus' to specify the mark beginning each entry in an itemized list, you do not need to type the braces (*note `@itemize': itemize.).

The Hyphen, or more accurately known as the hyphen-minus (-), is the shortest dash-like character visually.
Historically a double hyphen (--) was used to represent an em dash because on a typewriter the hyphens tend to connect, creating a dash in appearance, but since this is almost never the case in ASCII, do not use this.
That is, a spaced double hyphen may only be converted into a spaced em dash or a spaced en dash.

Dash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The en dash can not be used in programming languages for a minus, however, since the syntax usually requires a hyphen-minus; since programming languages are usually set in a fixed-pitch (monospaced) font face, the hyphen-minus looks acceptable there.
The hyphen-minus(-) was present in the ASCII and EBCDIC character encodings, and is typically used as a hyphen, a minus sign, and a dash in ASCII computer files.
The en dash is sometimes used as a substitute for the minus sign, when the minus sign character is not available, since the en dash is usually the same width as a plus sign.

Production First Software Encyclopedia of Typography and Electronic Communication : H
The original versions of ISO 8859 specified a 'minus' at <002d> and a « soft hyphen » at <00ad>.
For example, ANSI, EBCDIC, later additions to ISO 8859, ISO/IEC/10646, Macintosh, and Unicode specify a 'hyphen' or 'hyphen-minus' at code position <002d>.
Some encodings separately encode the 'hyphen' and the 'minus'; but some do not, due to historical and back-compatibility considerations.

It can’t decide if it’s a hyphen, a minus, or an en dash—in fact, the Unicode specification describes it as “hyphen-minus” and defines very specific replacements for each of its personalities.
First, neither an em dash nor an en dash should be confused with the hyphen (-), which is used to join compound words together.
Some also prefer it to a hyphen when text is set in all capital letters.

One might conclude from this that if the minus sign cannot be used but the en dash is available (e.g., when the character repertoire is limited to the so-called Windows character set), the en dash is a better surrogate for the minus sign than the hyphen-minus or the em dash.
The em dash is a multiple-use punctuation symbol, but it basically separates major parts of a statement, as opposite to the hyphen and the en dash, which have more “local”, separative functions.
In some usage, “long dashes” are used: “a two em dash” might indicate missing letters in a word (or sometimes a missing word); whereas “a three em dash” might indicate that a word or phrase has been left out.

Detailed descriptions of the characters [The ISO Latin 1 character repertoire]
It can usually be called "hyphen" or "minus" depending on the context, but when referred to as a character in a character repertoire, the best term is probably hyphen-minus.
It is much better to use these characters for quotations even if they are regarded as typographically inferior than to try to "construct" smart quotes from characters which are not quotes.
This is the well-known space character, or blank.

Each of the data point designators comprises two numbers separated by a hyphen: the number to the left of the hyphen is the Example number (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5); and, the numbers to the right of the hyphen were assigned according to the key listed in Table XIb.
Thus, the samples 146a and 146b are designated plus and minus 45 degree samples, respectively.

The minus (hyphen) character can be used to specify a range of characters in a character class.
If a minus character is required in a class, it must be escaped with a backslash or appear in a position where it cannot be interpreted as indicating a range, typically as the first or last character in the class.
Classes containing just a single character whose value is greater than 127 (but less than 256), for example, [x80] or [^x{93}], do not work because these are optimized into single byte matches.

A dash is a punctuation mark, and is not to be confused with the hyphen, which has quite different uses.
Em dashes are often represented by a pair of spaces surrounding a single minus sign (typical British usage) or by a pair of spaces surrounding two minus signs (mostly in the United States).
In consequence, it became common to substitute the nearest incorrect punctuation mark or symbol.

Em dashes are often represented by a pair of spaces surrounding a single minus sign (typical British usage) or by a pair of spaces surrounding two minus signs (mostly in the United States).
Note that it will not work with the hyphen key on the main keyboard (usually between "0" and "="), which has completely different functions associated with these commands.
In professionally printed documents, the typographer sometimes adds a hair space on either side of an em dash (a refinement that is not practicable in electronic form given the limitations of current-generation web browsers) or even a full space, though this last is uncommon.
