Hypnagogia (also spelled hypnogogia) and hypnopompia are experiences a person can go through when falling asleep in the case of hypnagogia, or waking up, in the case of hypnopompia.
Hypnagogia differs from hypnosis in that under ordinary hypnosis, people are physically inactive, and generally find their mental stimulus to be absorbing to the point that they don't differentiate between that stimulus and reality.
Hypnagogia is often proposed as an explanation for phenomena such as alien abduction and visions of saints or demons, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus Christ.

Hypnagogia: A Bridge to Other Realities
Hypnagogia, the deeply relaxed state of consciousness that occurs shortly prior to falling asleep, has been recognized for hundreds of years as a source of creative thought and intuition by a long list of distinguished philosophers, artists, and scientists, names of which include Aristotle and Albert Einstein (1).
Research into hypnagogia is now shedding light on long-sought-for explanations of psychic abilities and creative intuition obtained outside direct sensory processes by revealing the possibility that our brain may have the ability to tap into other states of consciousness (2).
Hypnagogia is in fact very common, occurring in 72 to 77 percent of the population, many are unaware of the phenomena (1).

 Hypnagogia
His interest in hypnagogia began accidentally and his central insight is that the hypnagogic state is profoundly ‘autosymbolic’, i.e.
Swedenborg was probably the first to recognise the autosymbolic nature of hypnagogia, and his dream journals are filled with impressive examples.
But his study of hypnagogia is the most thorough to date, and it is difficult to see how it will be surpassed as the standard work.

 Altered States
In terms of brainwave patterns, hypnagogia is the drowsy interval just preceding stage 1 sleep characterized by a slowing of the alpha rhythm (8 - 12 Hz) which then breaks up and is replaced by a slower and smaller amplitude theta rhythm (4 - 7 Hz).
According to Schacter (1976), hypnagogia is quite common occurring in 72 to 77 percent of the population although many times people are unaware of the phenomena.
On the average, only 5 to 10 minutes is spent in hypnagogia as one passes from a relaxed alpha brainwave state on into the first stages of sleep.

Hypnagogia is multifaceted and these experiences vary from person to person.
Andreas Mavromatis, author of Hypnagogia: The unique state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep, argues that ‘When the operation of unconscious or preconscious [Latent parts of the brain that are readily available to the conscious mind, although not currently in use] processes achieves a connection between widely separate matrices, the result is undeniably original’.
One method used by Dali was to nap whilst sitting in an arm chair holding a spoon over a pan so that when his muscles relaxed he’d drop the spoon into the pan which would wake him up and he would have the vivid hypnagogic images fresh in his mind for him to paint.

One of the very large topics that “Hypnagogia” explores is the Mulder/Scully dynamic, an issue that continually confounds viewers and readers.
This is not necessarily answered in “Hypnagogia” and I would be the last to suggest that they should be addressed explicitly.
Eventually, they must have release, and often this release is unpredictable and violent as illustrated in the crimes of “Hypnagogia.” The interplay of our heroes’ own psychic dilemma with murder and violence is a warning that they too, must eventually deal with the accumulated weight of the unconscious mind.

In regard to the first question: I personally have not yet been able to keep awareness during hypnagogia to a degree that neither awakens me from it nor allows me to lose it.
Regarding the second question, however, as I have noted on several occasions and remain by my opinion: it is not correct to strictly diffirentiate the states of hypnagogia and dreaming.
The physiology seems to be different indeed in between these two states, however, just as pointed out before, I would think that the "capabilities" in both states are equal but the first (hypnagogia) being simply less "stable" than the second and allowing for less...perhaps..."freedom" is the word.
