Hypnic jerk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is an involuntary muscle twitch (more generally known as myoclonus or a myoclonic twitch) which often occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep (see hypnagogia).
Hypnic jerks are completely normal, and are experienced by most people, especially when over-tired or sleeping uncomfortably.
Hypnic jerks are usually felt just once or twice per night.

Hypnic jerk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is the experience of a large jolt, usually felt just before falling asleep.
The exact cause of the sudden jerks is not clear, but are two main hypotheses to explain them.
Another hypothesis is that the feelings associated with relaxation before sleep are misinterpreted by the brain as falling or toppling over, and by reflex the body jerks out the limbs to stay upright.

Another theory put forward to try and explain the hypnic jerk is that the body reacts to falling asleep much in the way that a body may twitch when dying.
Sleep studies have shown that hypnic jerks affect around 10 percent of the population on a nightly basis.

That's called a hypnic jerk, and these jerks are a normal part of the body's transition from being awake and alert to going to sleep.
The first is that the jerking motion is part and parcel of the physical changes that accompany going to sleep —; your breathing slows down, your temperature drops, and your muscle tone changes.
In all probability, however, you are experiencing a normal hypnic jerk: nothing to be concerned about — it's annoying, as most jerks tend to be.
