Bacterial Populations in the Gut of the Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)
Bacterial Populations in the Gut of the Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)
Young silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were allowed to feed alternately on manure-silt (M–S) and algal (A) food sources for 1-h periods to determine the retention times and digestibility of those foods and the numbers and types of bacteria in them as they passed through the gut.
Food was retained in the gut for 4–5 h at 28.5°C. Feeding rates were similar for M–S and A, but the fish assimilated an average 52.4% of the organic matter in M-S and only 25.6% of the A mixture.

The bighead's consumption of zooplankton over phytoplankton is based on the mechanical aspects of the morphology of its filter feeding apparatus, and on its large suction volume during ingestion, which is much larger than that of the phytoplanktivorous silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Cremer and Smitherman, 1980).

Fall 2000 - Ichthyology News: Exotic bighead carp found in Lake Erie
A: The bighead carp, Hypophthalmichthys sp, an exotic species which was caught in a net on Lake Erie.
B: Craig Blackie and Dylan Weese are holding a very large carp, the bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys sp, which a fisherman had caught in his trap, in Lake Erie, and which an Axelrod Institute of Ichthyology collaborator, Bruce Morrison, brought to the Institute to be identified.

Silver carp are known to hybridize and to produce viable offspring with both bighead (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and largescale silver carps.
Bighead carp x silver carp are common in parts of the United States and are likely to be the result of wild spawning, not escapement of artificially induced hybrids because neither silver carp nor the hybrids are known to be in use in aquaculture in the United States.
Five percent of the adult Hypophthalmichthys caught in the lower Missouri River in 2004 were hybrids.

 Hypophthalmichthys molitrix
Typically, the eyes of the Bighead Carp are slightly lower on the head than those of the Silver Carp; however, this characteristic may not be diagnostic.
The name “Bigheaded Carps” is often applied collectively to include all the Hypophthalmichthys species.
A closely related species, the Largescale Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys harmandi; Sauvage 1884) occurs in Hainan Island, China, and northern Vietnam (PRFRI, 1991; Chen, 1998).

Modifies the list of fish species which are illegal to import, possess, or release into public waters without a permit to include the following exotic nuisance species: fl carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus); bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis); silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix); white perch (Morone americana), and 28 species of snakeheads (Family Channidae).
Similar to the closely-related silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), the bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) is a filter feeder that prefers large river habitats.
These so-called Asian carps have been used in many parts of the world as a food fish and sometimes introduced in combination with silver carp into sewage lagoons and aquaculture ponds (Jennings 1988).
