ALLERGY TESTING   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
This vaccine, actually is a hyposensitization injection, given subcutaneously (often at home) attempting to desensitize your pet to those things known to be causing a problem.
The basic principle of desensitization (hyposensitization) is to inject small amounts of the substances known to cause the allergic signs in increasing concentrations and at regular intervals in an effort to induce a tolerance of these substances by the pet’s body.
Hyposensitization injections and testing for food allergy is not successful and therefore not recommended.

Oral hyposensitization in the treatment of allergies - Patent 4822611
A method of treating allergies whereby hyposensitization to allergens to which the patient has been found to be sensitive by skin testing and history is induced by sequentially scheduled oral administration of titrated amounts of allergenic extracts in a liquid vehicle comprising defined proportions of a selected hexose monosaccharide and ethyl alcohol in water.
According to this invention, hyposensitization to various allergens is induced by sequentially scheduled oral administrtion of titrated amounts of the allergens to which the patient has been found to be sensitive, in a liquid vehicle comprising defined proportions of a selected hexose monosaccharide and ethyl alcohol in water.
Among the advantages of practice of allergic hyposensitization according to the present invention is that measurement of the administered doses need not be as precise as that required for subcutaneous injection.

Other terms that have been used for allergen immunotherapy are hyposensitization, allergen-specific desensitization, and the common terms allergy shots or injections.
Hyposensitization was formerly used interchangeably with allergen immunotherapy.
Immunomodulation is a global term that refers to a wide range of drug or immunologic interventions that alter normal or abnormal immune responses by deletion of specific T or B cells, immune deviation, anergic induction of peripheral or central tolerance, or modification of various inflammatory pathways (eg, chemotaxis, adhesins, or intracytoplasmic signaling).

 ALLERGY TESTING & HYPOSENSITIZATION
Therefore, hyposensitization represents a treatment option that should be explored, especially for a young pet or one that has a prolonged seasonal involvement.
Although hyposensitization does not provide a cure for allergy.
The goal of hyposensitization is to decrease this number of acute attacks to the minimum possible.

Efficacy of hyposensitization in feline allergic diseases based upon results of in vitro testing for allergen-specific ...
A survey was undertaken to evaluate the responses to hyposensitization in cats for which a diagnosis of allergic disease was made by assessment of clinical signs and evaluation of allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) using the radioallergosorbent test (RAST).
In nine patients, the hyposensitization was discontinued due to lack of response.
The results suggest that confirmation of a suspected diagnosis of allergic disease in cats by means of in vitro tests and subsequent therapy with hyposensitization should be a major consideration in feline practice.

integrityweb.com - Atopy (Inhaled Allergies) and Hyposensitization
Hyposensitization is the administration of gradually increasing quantities of allergen extracts to a dog or cat to diminish the adverse signs associated with exposure to that allergen.
Initially, this consists of two vials- vial 1- a start-up vial half-full and more pale in color which is used in the initial phases of small, dilute amounts when first starting hyposensitization; vial 2- maintenance vial which is a darker color when the next phase of treatment is started.
It is recommended that hyposensitization be continued for at least one year before a response or lack of response can be evaluated.

The effectiveness of hyposensitization is controversial because of the absence of well-controlled clinical studies with either oral or intramuscular use of urushiol.
Very careful hyposensitization using oral purified urushiol has been attempted; positive results have been reported, but many annoying side effects can occur, including pruritus ani and urticaria.
Hyposensitization with intramuscular injections has also appeared to benefit some patients.

Foundation for Integrated Medicine - Childhood Migraine
Children with frequent severe migraine were initially selected by the methods used in the study of diet and pediatric migraine at Great Ormond Street, ie freedom from headache during the oligoantigenic diet period and provocation of headache upon exposure to individual foods.
Participation in the hyposensitization trial was offered to children who fulfilled these criteria but for whom a safe diet was unacceptably restricted.
Forty children took part in the double-blind placebo-controlled trial of hyposensitization for migraine, each receiving an injection of placebo or active material every eight to ten weeks for a total of three injections.

Hyposensitization is the logical follow-up from an allergy test in which responsible allergens have been identified.

Hyposensitization must continue for many years if not for the life of the animal because symptoms reoccur when the therapy is terminated.

The Animal Medical Clinic - Allergies
The third major form of allergy treatment is hyposensitization with specific antigen injections (or "allergy shots").
For most dogs, a realistic goal is for the itching to be significantly reduced in severity; in some dogs, itching may completely resolve.
Although hyposensitization is the ideal way to treat inhalant allergy, it does have some drawbacks and may not be the best choice in certain circumstances and for these reasons:

Immunotherapy (hyposensitization) is a therapeutic approach whereby an allergen is administered to a hypersensitive patient in an attempt to reduce allergic reaction when the patient is naturally exposed to the allergen in the environment.

Since routine immunizations have been suspected of exacerbating auto-immune diseases, hyposensitization should be given cautiously to patients with other immunological diseases and only if the risk from insect stings is greater than the risk of exacerbating the underlying disorder.
Doctors administering venom, whether performing initial sensitivity testing or hyposensitisation, should be experienced in both administering hyposensitisation therapy and in the treatment of severe systemic reactions.
Hyposensitisation using ALBAY honeybee venom is recommended only for patients who demonstrate a clear history of reagin mediated allergenic reactions combined with a positive specific IgE or skin test.

 integrityweb.com - Hyposensitization Treatments
Hyposensitization works on the same principles as "allergy shots" for humans.
The idea is to initially expose your pet to dilute amounts of the allergen, then increase the strength in order to properly stimulate the immune system.
Usually, hyposensitization takes 4-6 months to see signs of improvement and treatment should be continued for at least a year and often is needed for life.

One final failure, which is not talked about: the substance with the largest reaction may NOT be the one which is causing you the most trouble, as I have found out many times with the help of Miller’s Method (see later in the testing section, page 000).
The hyposensitization method aims to find out which substances the patient is allergic to, by giving a whole batch of prick testing, and then to administer injections of a mixture of these, increasing gradually in strength, until quite large amounts are being tolerated.
