The Hypostomus inhabiting the Tampa area was reported as expanding its range into the Hillsborough River from Six Mile Creek (Courtenay and Stauffer 1990), but there are no supporting specimens, and these also may be based on misidentifications of Pterygoplichthys.

Freshwater Aquarium Species Profiles: Hypostomus plecostomus, the Common Pleco
Hypostomus plecostomus is the latin name of the ever-present "pleco", that almost obligatory algae eating "tank cleaner." I say "tank cleaner" loosely since these potentially large fish produce amazing amounts of waste.
To my knowledge their is no reliable way to sex these fish based on external features.
Hypostomus species in general are very hardy and make for an appropriate starter fish (provided the aquarium is 55 gallons or more).

Hypostomus is also paraphyletic, the bulk of it forming a monophyletic clade with Aphanotorulus, Cochliodon, and Isorineloricaria.
All of the potential monophyletic groups within Hypostomus grade into one another; therefore, Aphanotorulus, Cochliodon, and Isorineloricaria are placed in the synonymy of Hypostomus.
Sister to Pterygoplichthys is the Hemiancistrus annectens group (including Hypostomus panamensis) which represents an undescribed genus.

 Plecostomus Catfish Profile
FishBase calls these Hypostomus plecostomus but H. punctatus is commonly used in the literature (and they are sometimes relegated to the genus Liposarcus).
I do not wish to speculate on the correct specific name for this fish, so I'll play it safe by calling them Hypostomus ssp., especially since it is not clear that the Common Plecostomus imported for the hobby are all of the same species.
These are often sold to beginning aquarists as solutions to their algae problems but, much like the Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri), they are not apropos for the average community tank because of their eventual size and tendency toward aggression.

He's also quite active and a real hard worker: I rarely need to clean algae off of anything in this tank.
