Hypothetical imperative - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hypothetical imperative, originally introduced in the philosophical writings of Immanuel Kant, is a command that applies only conditionally: if A, then B, where A is a condition or goal, and B is an action.
Thus, a hypothetical imperative is not justified in itself, but as a means to an end; whether it is in force as a command depends on whether the end it helps attain is desired (or required).
The opposite of a hypothetical imperative is a categorical imperative, which is unconditional and an end in itself.

This really is a hypothetical question, as Powell labeled it in declining to answer, but it's a darned interesting one and one an honest leader in a democracy ought to be pondering about now, even if he doesn't care to share his thoughts.

20th WCP: Hypothetical Consent and Political Legitimacy
Hypothetical contracts, it is argued, are not binding; therefore hypothetical consent cannot justify political authority.
It is important to distinguish the claim that hypothetical consent is a metaphorical notion from the claim that a hypothetical contract is a metaphorical notion, or in Rawls' terms, a "device of representation".
But the fact that hypothetical consent does not create a contract — or, alternatively, that it creates a hypothetical contract that is merely metaphorical — does not entail that one has shown nothing of substance by establishing that someone would have made a certain promise.

The most persistently troubling empirical result in the CVM (contingent valuation method) literature is the tendency for hypothetical willingness to pay to overestimate real willingness to pay in laboratory and field settings.
Hypothetical bias is usually attributed to the presence of passive use values and lack of familiarity of paying for resources that provide passive use value.
However, hypothetical bias has been found in a variety of applications including private goods for which no passive use values should exist.

The hypothetical monopolist test is one of the organizing principles of the Horizontal Merger Guidelines, and it is a test increasingly applied to define markets, not just in merger cases, but throughout antitrust, and not just in the U.S., but throughout the world.
The iterative process required by the hypothetical monopolist test implies two subsidiary questions: first, what volume of lost sales will make the SSNIP unprofitable; and second, what volume of sales will be lost as a result of a SSNIP.
Because surveys could be one of few methods of addressing the hypothetical monopolist question without resorting to incomplete and fragmentary evidence that does not address overall demand characteristics, litigants should be able to devise methods to overcome any technical criticisms that can be levied against them.

A hypothetical syllogism contains at least one conditional proposition or statement, which takes the form of "if (antecedent) then (consequent)".
A rule for pure, valid hypothetical syllogisms is: Any pure hypothetical syllogism is valid in which the first premise and the conclusion have the same antecedent, the second premise and the conclusion have the same consequent, and the consequent of the first premise is the same as the antecedent of the second premise.
Two fallacies, or invalid forms of hypothetical syllogisms are to deny the antecedent, and to affirm the consequent:

Behind closed doors, governors were faced with a scenario of simultaneous bioterrorist attacks in cities in several unspecified states, then discussed responses through several steps -- from the first credible report, to engaging law enforcement, intelligence, and information officials to deploying of stockpiled vaccines.
The hypothetical attack involved anthrax, brought into the country by al-Qaida through the ports and spread by crop-duster planes, according to one person attending the private meeting.
Governors were particularly interested in how much information they would get from the federal government, and discussion included the state of readiness of bioterror vaccines.
