Phylogenetic relationships among hypotrichous ciliates determined with the macronuclear gene encoding the large, catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase alpha.
Hypotrich phylogenies based on DNA polymerase alpha amino acid sequences are incongruent with morphological and other molecular phylogenies.
Based upon these data, we assert that, contrary to morphological data, O. nova and O. trifallax are different species, and we propose that the oligotrich Halteria grandinella be reclassified as a hypotrich.

Hypotrich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The hypotrichs are a group of ciliate protozoa, included among the spirotrichs.
The hypotrichs were first defined by Friedrich von Stein in 1859.
Originally the stichotrichs, which also have cirri, were included here, but they were separated out by Small and Lynn, 1981, who placed the restricted hypotrichs among the Nassophorea because of various peculiarities in their infraciliature.

 Eigner Peter 1999 Hypotrichida
Recently published morphogenetic data are analyzed, shown in schematized computer drawings and added to the natural hypotrich system: Lamtostyla edaphoni is transferred to the genus Amphisiella Gourret and Roeser, 1888 within the family Oxytrichidae because of neokinetal 3 anlagen and long primary primordia development.
Onychodromopsis flexilis is also assigned to the Oxytrichidae because of neokinetal 3 and long primary primordia, whereas Sterkiella histriomuscorum generates "neokinetal 1" anlagen and long primary primordia are absent and therefore it is assigned to the family Parakahliellidae.
This way it was possible to reveal the relationship of all hypotrichs, for instance of the Oxytrichidae that are in a derived state and also those which are in an ancestral state where they have up to 80 ventral cirri.

Studies of divisional morphogenesis of hypotrich ciliates from literature with detailed descriptions of early stages of morphogenetic processes were analyzed and used for comparison.
This family is distinct from all other hypotrichs by developing all cirral rows by within anlagen development, except those anlagen developed by the oral primordium.

Macroscopical and microscopical characterization of a new, autosomal-recessive mouse mutant with hypotrichosis (sht/sht)
Hypotrich mice and littermates with a normal coat arose spontaneously in the progeny of two matings of the inbred albino-strain HDA32/Thb in 1989.
The objective of this investigation was to characterize the defects of the coat and to look for concommitant malformations of the hypotrich mice (sht/sht).

Limnology and Oceanography Abstracts   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Hypotrichs and scuticociliates resuspended independent of sediment erosion thresholds, whereas most diatoms resuspended with bulk sediment.
Community structure shifted accordingly, with total oligotrichs, hypotrichs, and scuticociliates changing from 75% to 96% of the ciliate community and the total diatom taxa listed above changing from 37% to 63% of the pennate cells.
Sequential resuspension suggests that the species assemblage entering the water column during a resuspension event depends on the maximal bed shear stress, thus varying with the springneap cycle as well as atmospheric forcing and local hydrography.

Intra-specific variation of a morphological inducible defense in the hypotrich ciliate Euplotes.
In this study we investigated the magnitude of morphological inducible defenses in response to predator density and its variability among clones.
We exposed 15 clones of the hypotrich ciliate Euplotes to four densities of the turbellarian predator Stenostomum virginianum in laboratory microcosms.

Protozoa: Ciliates: Heterotrichs. An introduction with photomicrographs.
These variations highlight the difficulties involved in classifying organisms which may not be closely related to one another, but have developed very similar features and appearance by a process of convergent evolution.
Stylonychia can be considered a typical example of a heterotrich ciliate (although in some systems it is classed as a hypotrich) on account of the cirri on its ventral surface (underside) which act as legs, and the membranelle which follows the line of the oral groove (see diagram).
It is a common freshwater ciliate and has similar features to smaller heterotrichs such as Euplotes and Aspidisca, although genetic investigations involving ribosomal RNA and electron microscopy are beginning to reveal that many in this group are not so closely related, despite appearances.

It is not known if there is loss of DNA during maturation of the micronucleus in Paramecium, but it is probably not very much.
Bruns has suggested that mating type is inherited through the presence of two loci within the micronucleus with mating type depending on whether one or other of these gets into the macronucleus.

Stop codon recognition in ciliates: Euplotes release factor does not respond to reassigned UGA codon
The known changes concern the reassignment of stop codons to sense codons.
For example, Tetrahymena and Paramecium, and the hypotrichs Stylonychia and Oxytricha, translate UAA and UAG as glutamine, UGA being the only stop codon, whereas the hypotrich Euplotes translates UGA as cysteine and uses UAA and UAG as stop codons (for review see Lozupone et al., 2001).
It has been postulated that in addition to changes in tRNAs, stop codon reassignment has to involve alterations of eRF1 structure.
