Hyuga (日向国; HyÅ«ga no kuni) was an old province of Japan on the east coast of Kyushu, corresponding to the modern Miyazaki prefecture.
Hyuga bordered on Bungo, Higo, Osumi, and Satsuma Provinces.
During the Sengoku period, the area was often divided into a northern fief around Agata castle (near modern Nobeoka), and a southern fief around Obi castle, near modern Nichinan.

Kanetsugu believed that maintaining a good relationship with the neighboring Shimazu clan was essential to the clan's survival and had the eldest daughter of Shimazu Tadayoshi as his wife as well as having his sister marry Shimazu Takahisa.
On the other hand, he moved to unify Osumi Province and captured Takaoka Castle in 1538 to capture the majority of the province.
In 1561, the relationship between his clan and Shimazu collapsed and Kanetsugu allied with Ito clan of Hyuga Province to counter Shimazu.

He was initially Koremune Tadayoshi (惟宗忠久) but after given Shimazu, Hyuga Province to rule from Minamoto no Yoritomo, he took the name of Shimazu.

HIJMS Hyuga, commanded by Rear Admiral Kusagawa Kiyoshi, was attacked by American carrier aircraft at Nasake-jima, south of Kure, on 28 July 1945 and her crew ran the ship aground in shallow waters.
She was removed from the Navy List on 20 November 1945.

Conversion of the Hyuga took place between July 1, 1943 and November 30, 1943.
During the conversion the X and Y turrets were removed and the deck raised two levels and covered a broad platform, the whole forming a hanger which would house 22 seaplanes.

Tosa was ruled by the Chosokabe clan during the Sengoku period, and Chosokabe Motochika briefly unified Shikoku under his rule, although he was reduced to Tosa again by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and dispossessed entirely after Sekigahara.
