Basically, this is because the Santa Fe pre-dates Hyundai's buy-out of Kia, with which it has co-developed the Tucson (Kia's version will be the all-new Sportage, to be launched later this year), but Hyundai thinks it's too early to kill the Santa Fe off all the time it's still selling.
The Tucson is the more car-like vehicle, with a different four-wheel drive system; it can tow up to 1600kg, whereas the Santa Fe can manage up to 2300kg, and the latter also has more luggage space.
Hyundai also makes a more workmanlike large 4x4, the Terracan (a reworked old-generation Mitsubishi Shogun) which is actually the most versatile vehicle of them all, if off-road ability and mud-plugging are more important than on-road refinement.
