The case for the prosecution, Issue 35
HYWEL WILLIAMS was John Redwood's chief of staff from 1993 to 1997, and can therefore write with authority about the Tories' decline and fall.
Even Portillo, who retains the affections of the right, does not measure up in Williams' estimation, attacking 'foreigners' who 'bought their academic qualifications' and vowing that Brussels would never command British troops (odd considering NATO headquarters is in Brussels) then having to apologise to the chiefs of staff.
Williams observes from all this that politics no longer deals with the 'great issues', and "MPs of all parties were being drawn from a narrower and more homogenous pool of apparatchiks.

The C.R. Boxer Affaire: Heroes, Traitors, and the Manchester Guardian - Council on Foreign Relations
Hywel Williams, in his The Guardian article, claims Tulloch, known as the "most beautiful woman" in Hong Kong, was also one of the most promiscuous.
The discovery of the "transmitter" by the Japanese in July 1943, Hywel Williams implies, was a result of Boxer’s treachery.
One of Williams’ more bizarre inaccuracies is his "charge" that Hahn was a "feminist and a communist sympathizer," doubtless intended to reinforce his innuendoes that Boxer was like the Soviet moles within the British establishment, a man with the proclivities for treachery because of his relationship with such a woman.

Williams shows the flaws of leadership and policy without restricting himself to one perspective on them, and so the conclusion is all the more damning precisely because it is not based simply on right- or left-wing views.

Work from Prof Williams own department (1), has shown that, in many cases, from the patients’ perspective using a corticosteroid to control their eczema produces risks which are unacceptably high, resulting in non- compliance and inadequate treatment.
