(The word "robot" didn't exist in its modern sense when this film was made, and the automatic motorist of the title was described as a "clockwork man".

The film cassette system was redesigned but it was only with the IIa launched in 1951 that film could be fed from a standard 35 mm cassette onto a special Robot cassette for take up.

East Valley Tribune Daily Arizona news for Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale
Rebellion isn’t the only robotic theme explored by filmmakers; often, robotic characters are used to illustrate affairs of the heart, of finding connection and happiness in a technological world that often seems cold and remote.
In the more recent "Robot Stories" (2003), from independent filmmaker Greg Pak, robotic characters grapple with issues ranging from parental separation to romantic isolation.
Filmmakers revisit this somewhat paranoid theme regularly, from "The Terminator" to "The Matrix" to the Will Smith robots-runamok thriller "I, Robot," opening Friday.

This is an incredibly good film, by the makers of "Ice Age", who wisely decided against "Ice Age 2" and came up with something wildly inventive and different.
In this world of machines and robots, a young and intelligent male robot Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor) is considered an aspiring inventor.
The comedy varies from the slapstick (which children will love), to wonderful pastiches of movies (the dance sequence "I'm singing in the oil" by the robot Fender, voiced by Robin Williams, is particularly brilliant); the everyday life in robot world, and the birth and Rodney's growing up is wonderfully amusing.

From the destructive mechanical witch of the silent era "Metropolis" to the parasitic life-sucking machines of "The Matrix," robots -- the technologized humanoids of science fiction -- have sought to destroy or enslave humanity over the history of film.
Although a killer alien robot -- Gort -- incinerates dozens of Army men in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," Robert Wise's 1951 classic is actually a harbinger of the new docile robot of the '50s.

Positronic brain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The robots in the 2004 film "I, Robot" also had positronic brains.
Sonny, one of the main characters from the film, had two separate positonic brains working in unison, which meant he had choices open to him the other standard robots in the film did not.
When Asimov wrote his first robot stories in 1939/1940, the positron was a newly discovered particle and so the buzz word positronic, coined by analogy with electronic, added a contemporary gloss of popular science to the concept.

At the core of 'I, Robot' beats the soul of Asimov as his 3 laws regarding robots are sacredly left intact and the film does abide by them.
The film also hints at a very intelligent story around the robots but again it never totally follows through in as much detail as it could have done.

Calvin's reaction to the news is mirrored in Moynahan's astonishment when the same thing happens in the film (that story, entitled "Little Lost Robot," also was the basis for the scene in the film where Sonny hides in a virtual army of identical robots.

Sitting in his cramped downtown office, NYU alum Greg Pak is wedged between a makeshift digital-editing station and a messy stack of posters for his film Robot Stories.
Composed as a quartet of expertly acted chapters, the film’s a smart evocation of love in the near-future, told through a widower’s grief, a mother’s anxiety, a family’s tragedy, and a robot’s confusion.
Greg Pak’s lovely, low-key science-fiction film has more in common with the short stories of Ray Bradbury than the pyrotechnics of George Lucas.

 I, Robot Review (DVD Movie/Film)
For on the whole, I Robot is that rare of beasts: a fun but intelligent action film, populated by actors who divest their characters with more than one basic emotion.
Although I, Robot is admittedly at times a cinematic magpie, stealing elements from films such as Minority Report and Robocop, Proyas still manages to create a style that is essentially his own, bringing to life a not-too-distant future that has seen huge technological advances but that is still grounded in a recognisable reality.
In this, the latest film from director Alex Proyas, the world circa 2035 has developed a considerable reliance on robotic ‘Automated Domestic Assistants’.

Once in Robot City, Rodney is disheartened to learn that his benovelent corporate hero Bigweld (Mel Brooks) is missing, and Bigweld’s slick-but-evil replacement Ratchet (Greg Kinnear) is implementing a dastardly plan: spare parts are to be abolished, forcing well-worn robots to either get expensive upgrades or make a one-way visit to the scrap heap.
"Robots" could be better, but more likely than not, all the marvelous gears, rivets and ball bearings will capture your attention enough to overcome any of its design flaws.

Robots Run Amok would have been a better title, and one that would have minimized my disappointment in the film, whose premise is that robots were able to overcome the Three Laws because they rationalized their way around them.

Robot Monster, along with Cat Woman of the Moon, is one of two low-budget sci-fi features that Bernstein scored at the outset of his career, and they're usually referred to as humorous footnotes to a very successful film music career.
Robot Monster is usually grouped among the worst movies ever made and has been called the worst science-fiction film ever made, but this reviewer has long believed that the criticism is not only unfair, but misguided.
If viewers go in recognizing this, and also are aware that dreams are, by their nature, irrational and inconsistent, then Robot Monster suddenly seems a lot better as a movie.
