I Am Sam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I Am Sam is a 2001 film about a mentally retarded man, Sam Dawson, singularly raising his seven year old daughter Lucy.
Lucy is as precocious as Sam is backwards.
Sam loves reading Green Eggs And Ham to her, but when she starts reading "real hard" books like Stellaluna (about the baby bat) she balks at reading the word different because she doesn't want to be smarter than her dad.

 Review: I Am Sam
The Sam of the movie may also be connecting with the words "I am Sam, Sam I am" at a deeper level.
The "I am" structure may be resonating with Sam's soul, with that spark of God within himself that some spiritual paths refer to as the "I am" presence.
Sam may not look like the epitome of love, but he is. Rita may look like she is all together, but she isn't.

 I Am Sam
Sam Dawson is a grown man with autistic tendencies and the mind of a 7-year old.
Sam and the viewer encounter Rita as a snappish ball-busting career-woman, yelling into her cellphone, cursing, lying, kicking tables, driving like a mad person, dishing out oblique threats, blowing people off and making her secretary cry.
I was therefore expecting I Am Sam to skate over issues, and while it does to a certain degree, there are enough suggestions present for the audience to work with, such as how it really is Annie who gives the toddler Lucy all the developmental stimulation she needs.

I Am Sam is a feel-good movie in the worst possible sense of the term.
First of all, each and every scene in the film hinges on Sam’s low intelligence--everyone he interacts with treats him like a “retard.” To some, that means treating him as if he were an incompetent animal, to others it means treating him with a syrupy sweetness--either way, Sam’s mental handicap remains his one defining characteristic.
In order to get rid of him, she tells Sam that she’ll give him the phone number of an associate that might be able to handle his case, even though she has absolutely no intention of doing so.
