Five Phase I Ching : Hexagram Pairs
Of interest in the dynamics of hexagrams, an interesting pattern in the Changing-Line Matrix, is a relationship of PAIRS of hexagrams where there is a sense of direction, FROM A to B in the pairs.
09 - this hexagram deals with the making of small gains, pilling them up and so 'standing upon them' to be noticed and so become influencial.
By this I mean that hexagram 51 is energy expending, concentrated, and as such 57 reflects a DAMPENING focus, a focus on 'diffuse' use of energy (as in 'Wind') compared to the intense, precise use of energy (as in 'Thunder').

  IC+ introduction part II
In the modern-day use of the I Ching, there is a strong bias to interpreting each line of a hexagram as of 'equal' value to all of the rest.
Thus the base line of a hexagram is linked to a raw characteristic that is then refined as we move through the hexagram to become the 'refined' whole at the top line; there is a qualitative change, a change rooted in cardinality.
Hexagram 28 is found to describe the movement from hexagram 16 to hexagram 09, and in the context of line 1 of hexagram 1, hexagram 16 is biased to the line unchanging, and hexagram 09 is biased to the line changing.

This hexagram also involves tracing a process back to its beginning, to the first stage of a "time cycle." The flashbacks on Lost are clearly pertinent to this concept and we'll probably see (as in the first episode of the new season) that the flashbacks will become increasingly relevant to understanding the castaways' current situation.
The thurst of this hexagram is twofold -- first, keeping words simple and therefore close to the truth, and second, success through a sacrifice and the beginning of a second stage in the time cycle.
The hexagram also -- significantly, I think -- carries a connotation of imposing a direction on the flow of time "from present to past." Given that the survivors are continually poised between past and present via the device of the flashbacks, I think there must be a meaningful conception of time embedded within the show.

Hexagram 57 is more differentiating and more 'dynamic' as it reflects moving to others to cultivate and become influencial.
Hexagram 57, reflecting wind, focuses on eliciting change through manipulation of context rather than text in that manipulation of context will force the text to adapt and in doing so the focus avoids any direct confrontations re needs for change.

In this respect Leibniz was wrong: the hexagrams do not represent numbers, they are merely the result of the task of combining two discrete elements, and the resulting combinations does not represent any numbers at all, least of all the binary numeral system.

Multiple changing line combinations in hexagrams.
This works on the principle outlined in the discussion on context that since the hexagrams are supposed to encapsulate all that there is, then line changes are caused by the influences of other hexagrams being placed as context, for it is a change in context that can ellicit a change in the text.
For each hexagram 'required' there is a hexagram that works as context to change the lines of the current hexagram to those of the 'required' hexagram.
From this model we see that the positional context hexagram serves as a static aspect of the whole - it is invarient over change - whilst the line hexagram pairs are more related to dynamic aspects - so we move from the whole (01) and into analysis of it's static and dynamic aspects.
