The power represented by the hexagram is to be interpreted in a dual sense in terms of its action on the universe and of its action on the world of men.
In the hexagram of heaven the doubling of the trigram implies duration in time, but in the hexagram of earth the doubling connotes the solidity and extension in space by virtue of which the earth is able to carry and preserve all things that live and move upon it.
The hexagram presents a configuration of circumstances in which a strong element is temporarily held in leash by a weak element.

Five Phase I Ching : Hexagram Pairs
Of interest in the dynamics of hexagrams, an interesting pattern in the Changing-Line Matrix, is a relationship of PAIRS of hexagrams where there is a sense of direction, FROM A to B in the pairs.
By this I mean that hexagram 51 is energy expending, concentrated, and as such 57 reflects a DAMPENING focus, a focus on 'diffuse' use of energy (as in 'Wind') compared to the intense, precise use of energy (as in 'Thunder').
14 - this hexagram deals with working into a position of influence and wealth and directing development.

This crude meterological analogy overlooks the reality that after one has selected one of the hexagrams through the divining method, this is then followed by considerable interpretation to discern the meaning in regard to one's present situation.
Still, the bottom line is that the person consulting the I Ching (which is often described as if it were a person, rather than a text) comes to it with a question, and the particular hexagram that is selected is seen as somehow reflecting and revealing that moment's particular dynamic.
After you have cast your hexagram, go to the I Ching Square, which has a table of all 64 hexagrams in the I Ching.

This hexagram consists of a doubling of the trigram K'an.
It is one of the eight hexagrams in which doubling occurs.
The name of the hexagram, because the trigram is doubled, has the additional meaning, "repetition of danger." Thus the hexagram is intended to designate an objective situation to which one must become accustomed, not a subjective attitude.

The hexagram as a whole means that if balance cannot be maintained by two, a third element of support should be made use of.
This hexagram calls for sacrificing that which is of the highest "earthly value" - the feeling that we are in command, and we have that ability and right to guide ourself.
When we receive this hexagram without lines, or as a second hexagram, it either means we should relinquish inappropriate thoughts, or it confirms that we have established a connection with the Higher Power through having made a true sacrifice of our ego.

I Ching: An Annotated Bibliography by Edward Hacker, Steve Moore, Lorraine Patsco (Routledge) With over one thousand entries covering a diverse range of sources including books, articles, unpublished dissertations, taped lectures, devices and software, this is the most comprehensive annotated bibliography of English works on the I Ching.
If the importance of books is measured by the numbers of their readers, the amount of commentary written on them, the quantity of editions and translations...and, perhaps more than this, the way they've affected human lives across the centuries and the continents...then surely two would appear far ahead of the rest of the field.
It appeared to me that the perspective and the conceptual devices with which the 1 Ching depicts the essential conditions of the social world were of significance in modem social sciences and their main ideas could be translated without much difficulty into sociological terminology.

But what Blofeld brought to the I Ching in the mid '60's was a fresh energy and a simple, intentionally "unliterary" voice, which was much needed at the time and which still has value.
Confucian glosses are present in the basic core text of the Yi Ching, but besides those, Blofeld has left aside the greater bulk of Confucian commentary matereal, focusing, instead, on the main text symbolism, giving better emphasis to the divination process itself.
The Yi Ching teaches that the universe unfolds according to immutable laws; the difference between the sage and the fool, is that the former seeks to align himself with those laws, whereas the fool opposes them.

In my reading this line exempifies a practice fairly common in the I Ching (and in classic Chinese philosophy in general): to first quote a maxim or axiom and then turn it around, bringing forth a deeper truth that overrides the first.
The advice thus becomes “you will never reach a great possession (intellectual or material) if you judge a book by its cover.” The first lesson of hexagram 14 concerns reaching the root (jian) of the matter and not stopping at a shallow opinion of what APPEARS to be harmful.
If one wants to influence for the good one should not be hasty in judgement- the danger lies in the alienation of others, on the one hand, and of becoming the victim-believer of one’s own prejudices on the other hand.

These relationships have been uncovered through an analysis on how the I Ching was created and how the I Ching reflects properties of our brain in its attempts to derive meaning where the method of derivation of hexagrams automatically associates hexagrams into pairs (2), quartets (4), and octets (8).
This sequence relates pairs of hexagrams as being variations on a theme where the variation is the BOTTOM line of the hexagram.
Below are given the links to pages of all 64 hexagrams with their names, general comments on trigram make-up, and the detailed comments on relationships of hexagram pairs as cooperative and competitive (opposite) forms in the expression of meaning.

 I Ching
The I Ching, or Book of Change, is a Chinese oracle laid down by four authors, first appearing at about 3000 B.C.E. It arises out of the oldest of Chinese philosophies, predating even Taoism, which nonetheless can be applied very naturally to the I Ching.
Each hexagram evokes a general image which is tied to a general principle involved in the operation of the universe.
To consult the I Ching, in response to a question, concept or feeling, you toss coins, throw yarrow sticks, or (for those on the cutting edge of technology) use an I Ching program on your home computer or the Internet.
