However, the corps structure was so important that army commanders got around this by creating informal "wings" and placing a major general in charge of them.
Armies were essentially autonomous, reporting directly to a the head of a department (a section of the country overseen by a general), a general in charge of all the armies of the nation, or the president himself.
The cavalry was moved to a cavalry unit and the artillery was moved to the artillery reserve of the army or corps.

I Corps (ACW) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The I Corps was activated March 13, 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln ordered the creation of a four-corps army, then under the command of Major General George B. McClellan.
The corps moved southward to fight General Robert E. Lee's army at the Battle of Fredericksburg, commanded by Major General John F. Reynolds, arguably the best Union corps commander in the Eastern Theater.
On March 24, 1864, the Civil War career of the I Corps came to an end as it was disbanded and its depleted units were reorganized into two divisions, which were transferred into the V Corps of the Army of the Potomac.

TheHistoryNet | America's Civil War | America's Civil War: XI Corps Fight During the Chancellorsville Campaign
During the Antietam campaign, the XI Corps remained on guard in Washington, and by the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, the XI Corps had been combined with the XII Corps into a Grand Division led by Maj. Gen.
Even though 16 of the XI Corps' 27 regiments had seen combat, they had fought in actions considered "minor" by the survivors of Antietam and Fredericksburg, and the corps was held in contempt.
Actually, close to 50 percent of the corps were American citizens by birth, and a large portion of the foreign-born were naturalized citizens.

 ACW Campaign Rules
If the attacker has the edge in cavalry, then one corps is permitted to start deployed on the board within 6" of the edge of the board, and within 9" either side of the entry point used, with the rest of the force in road column behind that unit.
In both cases corps troops are promoted to the next level when the majority of the stands in their unit reach that level.
However corps are functional organisations, and it may be sensible for the units left behind in various boxes to be combined as a corps whose function is garrison duties.

CWOL War College: Evolution of ACW Command & Control
This is mainly due to the use of different terms plus the fact that the main focus of the ACW staff was to keep the unit functional by providing the required logistics, subsistence, communications, and medical services (used more for epidemics in camp than combat losses).
The success of this command arrangement lead to the celebrated Union "corps system" that was used to great effect in 1863-65 to move land forces between theaters and armies with great success in continuity of the commands.
The use of corps (which was applied significantly looser than in the North) was emplaced to ensure that certain region's "favorite son" had the stature to be a participant in the field army's "War Councils".

Lincoln was adamant that corps be added to the chain of command, an evolutionary step that McClellan was not ready to take.
McClellan, now near Richmond, was forced to split his army, leaving three corps north of the Chickahominy River, which runs southeast across the peninsula, to await McDowell and protect White House.
Meanwhile, two corps were moved south of the river to confront Richmond.

Civil War Corps Badges - Wikimedia Commons
Corps badges were originally worn by Union soldiers on the top of their army forage cap (kepi), left side of the hat, or over their left breast.
The idea is attributed to Gen. Philip Kearny who ordered the men in his sew a two-inch square of red cloth on their hats to avoid confusion on the battlefield.
This idea was adopted by Gen. Joseph Hooker after he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac, so any soldier could be identified at a distance.
